Very spirited scrimmage with the Defense getting some noise, some stops and some turnovers which was nice to see.
The biggest take away was who was running with the 1s on offense. Kind of unexpected.
LT Terrance Steele then Madison Akamnonu in the few plays Steele was out.
LG Paul Stawarz then Madison Akamnonu
C Grant Caravelli
RG Justin Murphy then Zack Adams
RT Travis Bruffy, then Paul Stawarz then Cody Wheeler
Missing from the scrimmage was Baylen Brown and Tony Morales. May have missed them in the scrimmage because could not see number on jersey. I am certain I did not see Tony Morales. He is like the shortest OL guy we have.
The top 4 QBs got into the scrimmage. Mahomes then Shimonek then Duffy then Sullins. I have the feeling Duffy will RS this fall. No reason to burn a year as Shimonek looked really good.
RBs all had carries. Stockton, Felton, Ward then Dauphine in that order. Felton and Ward had the best looking running plays for 30 plus yards each in designed off tackle plays. Inside running game no one really looked great as the D front 7 held up.
FB plays White and Scalzi. White had a nice swing pass for about 20 yards. Scalzi had a nice block to spring Ward.
X Derrick Willies, Devin Lauderdale, Tony Brown
H Cameron Batson, Da’quan Bowman, Kekee Coutee
Y Jonathan Giles, Ian Sadler, Quan Shorts
Z Dylan Cantrell, Reginald Davis III, TJ Vasher
WRs that really stood out. Cantrell, Giles and Batson. Giles is showing to super toughness and ran over the DBs a couple times for extra yards. Coutee a one good series where he got to show some sweet moves in his catch and run TD where he laid out to cross get goal line by the length of the football. Lauderdale still a strong blocking force but did not have any highlight catches.
The defensive rotation too fast to keep up as I do not know all the numbers yet. Lots of rotation. However these are who I got for each position: Note: A few players had jersey rolled up and could not see number.
DE Zach Barnes then Kohn Hill then Lonzell Gilmore
NT Ondre Pipkins then Joseph Wallace then Broderick Washington
DT Breiden Fehoko then Taylor Nunez then Mychealon Thomas
RDE Garry Moore then Kris Williams. Could of sworn I saw Joseph Wallace line up as DE a couple times
WLB Luke Stice then Johnathan Picone
MLB D'Vonta Hinton then Brayden Stringer
SLB Malik Jenkins
LCB Trevon Madison then DJ Polite-Bray
NB Justice Nelson then Adrian Jones
S Jah'Shawn Johnson then Payton Hendrix
SS Keenan Ward then Payton Hendrix then Christian Taylor
RCB Paul Banks III then Thierry Neguma then Douglas Coleman
Note: Rotation fast and I may have confused a player or two with wrong position in Secondary as they were constantly moving in nickle and dime looks which makes it hard to see jersey numbers and specific position. Not certain what to think of the dime package as alignment was not all that clear from where I was watching.
Defensively, Secondary looked pretty good for the most part but still getting burned over the top like last year on inside release go routes. Running defense was a mixed bag. Looked good for inside running plays, horrid for off tackle or outside plays. RBs in off tackle to outside runs got massive yardage. Madison, Nelson and Jah'shawn Johnson looked really good. Madison caused a fumble on Ian Sadler where Johnson recovered and ran it back for a TD. Douglass Coleman struggled at right CB in this scrimmage where he got run over by Giles and got burned over the top.
DL looking better on the inside. The pass rush was not what I like to see and was disappointing from my perspective. However, in situational scrimmage they may not have been green lit to get after the QB. The Defense was mostly in vanilla sets with a few stunts and odd alignments. This scrimmage was for personnel evaluation as plays run were specifically targeting every position grouping multiple times. So, the full offensive and defensive playbook was not on display. Scrimmage was definitely for settling the depth chart for the SFA game.
Hope this gives some insight for the rabid TTU fan.
