First off I am a freshman at Texas Tech and have been a fan of Tech athletics my entire life. Although Tech did win on Thursday night I became frustrated throughout the game multiple times with on field issues as well as with our fans. First off I'm fine with people throwing tortillas on the opening kickoff and some on later kickoffs, it's good and fun and I don't see the problem with it. BUT after that kickoff don't roll them up into a ball and purposefully try to hit the opposing team, it's childish, not funny, and is one of the reasons Texas Tech University gets a bad rep. Also I became very disappointed with our student section, if you are going to go to a Texas Tech football game, ACTUALLY WATCH THE GAME! I am sick and tired of seeing people turned all the way around and talking to the people behind them... like what else are you here for except to watch a football game and to cheer on our team. Also don't leave at halftime, it was so disheartening seeing (at least where I was) more than half of the students leave, like seriously?! Don't even show up if you're not going to stay at least until the 4th quarter. I understand if they had prior obligations to attend to, if they had an emergency, or they had to study for a test but seriously, it is a Texas Tech football game what else do you want. Also there are so many students that chant the BS chant and challenge the referees at every turn, like watch the replay on the video board then you can disagree don't automatically start disagreeing with them unless you know it was without a doubt a bad call. Other than that I was okay with how we were loud and rowdy, but us as fans need to remember we represent more than just us, we represent our university and should do so with pride.
Overall I was proud of the Texas Tech defense, I felt like that was the best defensive performance I've personally seen in a while ( I wasn't able to watch the Tech v. SFA game). I thought the offense was underwhelming at times, and looked really good when Shimonek was in. But the offensive line (especially Tony Morales) is what really annoyed me, so many holding penalties and false starts that stalled out drives and kept holding us back, it was really disappointing to watch. Also Clayton Hatfield, I have no doubt that kicking is a hard and underappreciated job, but it seems like I cringe every time he attempts a FG/PAT. He reminds me of Ryan Bustin where every single time he attempted a kick it was either straight down the middle, squeaking it by, or just flat out missing it. I apologize for this post being too long, but I had to get this off my chest. Keep up the good work writers of VTM I enjoy reading all of y'all's articles!
