Texas Tech Recruiting Roundup, 3/24

Last weekend Avery Davis committed to Notre Dame, who are some potential quarterbacks to target now?

This past weekend 4-star quarterback Avery Davis committed to Notre Dame. Texas Tech was targeting Davis and looked to be in the highly sought after recruit's top 3 but after a visit to South Bend he committed to the Fighting Irish. As of now the Red Raiders have Xavier Martin committed for their 2017 recruiting class. Martin played wide receiver at Cibolo Steele before stepping in at QB this past season. This past weekend Martin competed in the Rivals QB Challenge in Dallas and proved that he can for sure play quarterback but some still wonder if he'll play QB or switch to another position in college. This week I will take a look at some under the radar quarterback prospects that Texas Tech might try to get in on much like they did with Jett Duffey.

Cam Roane | 6'2", 195 lbs | Quarterback

Heritage High School (Colleyville, TX)

24/7  | Rivals | Scout

Before going to The Opening Dallas Regional I knew nothing about Cam Roane. But as myself and Ryan (RSmith1) shadowed Roane throughout the day one thing was clear, the guy can make just about any throw and with accuracy. Jett Duffey seemed to take a liking to Roane as well. The two were joking around and playing catch with one another while waiting for drills to start. Since competing in the QB finals at The Opening, Roane has gained another offer from UTSA and now holds 3 offers in total. Roane started 2 seasons at a small private school before transferring to Colleyville Heritage where he threw for 2344 yards and 21 touchdowns his junior season. If Roane shows out in more camps or puts together a nice senior year it wouldn't surprise me if Texas Tech reaches out to him, especially if Duffey and him are pals.

Frank Harris | 6'1", 180 lbs | Quarterback

Clemens High School (Schertz, TX)

24/7  | Rivals NR | Scout

Ben Baby of the San Antonio Express-News has referred to Frank Harris as Johnny 2.0 which makes sense after Harris' junior year. He had 2013 passing yards and 16 touchdowns while also running for 2580 yards and 36 touchdowns. Those numbers are just ridiculous, it's like if you created a 99 overall player on NCAA Football and played on Rookie mode. Both Rivals and 24/7 have Harris listed at quarterback while Scout has him as an athlete. It'll be interesting to see what sort of numbers Harris puts up his senior year. It's also to be noted that Harris and Martin train at the same quarterback academy. If Harris really is Johnny 2.0 I expect Kliff to take notice. As of now he holds 8 offers with Baylor being his only Power 5 offer.

Jarret Doege | 6'2", 190 lbs | Quarterback

Cooper High School (Lubbock, TX)

24/7  | Rivals NR | Scout

Name sounds familiar, right? Probably because Jarret is the younger brother of Texas Tech alum Seth Doege. The younger Doege plays at Lubbock Cooper so he's right in Texas Tech's backyard. Last season he threw for 2178 yards and 23 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions. As of now Texas Tech hasn't offered Doege but he has taken an unofficial visit. Once Mike Jinks arrived at Bowling Green he was quick to offer Doege back in January and that's his only offer at the moment. Doege was also at The Opening Dallas Regional but unless you're pretty much perfect it's hard to stand out at those camps. I'm sure Texas Tech will keep an eye on Doege's senior season.

The 2017 recruiting cycle is still young so it'll be interesting to see how everything plays out. I expect the coaching staff to add another quarterback commit along with Xavier Martin because depth is never a bad thing and completion brings out the best in players. VTM will keep our viewers updated should their be any breaking recruiting news.
