Red Raiders Add A LB Transfer

Luke Stice, senior linebacker and fullback for Houston, decides to come home to West Texas

Thomas B. Shea-USA TODAY Sports

Last night, something popped up on twitter that caught me completely off guard. Usually you hear a few rumors on transfers, like we did with Kolin Hill and Ondre Pipkins.

Luke Stice graduated from Midland Lee in 2011, in which he was named the district 3-5A defensive player of the year, credited with 115 tackles, and 19 tackles for loss. Luke's uncle played for the Red Raiders in the 80's, and based on his social media name 'WestTxWorkHorse37', he is a West Texas boy. He may feel he has a better chance to play in Lubbock, and will come in as a senior graduate transfer.

Luke walked on at Houston in 2012, playing mostly on special teams, playing in 9 games with tackles. In 2013 he was nominated for the walk-on of the year, and was the teams starting fullback. He played all 13 games in 2013 and 2014, as a pivotal member of the special teams as well as 1 reception for 4 yards. He would have been a senior this past season but has no stats and it is being reported he will use his last year of eligibility at Tech. Luke was also named to the 2012-2013 USA Commissioners Honor Roll.

Stice will most likely be used in a depth role, and if his tackling prowess continues, a good replacement for senior Micah Awe as well as losing transfer LB Mike Mitchell.  He is listed at 6'0 230 pounds and recently graduated from Houston, so he will be a graduate transfer, and should be eligible to play immediately. Welcome Luke back home to the South Plains!!!
