Details Released in HIring Gibbs and Spavital. Per the LAJ we have additional details regarding the hiring of Texas Tech defensive coordinator David Gibbs and assistant Zac Spavital. The LAJ obtained these records through an open records request and have details regarding the hiring of Gibbs and Spavital. On December 23rd, head coach Kliff Kingsbury, Kenny Bell, who is Kingsbury's chief of staff, and Gibbs were passengers in a plane. This seems a bit incomplete because it doesn't say where the plan went and it doesn't say where the plane went once it got to wherever it was going. You have to assume that the plane went to Houston and then maybe to Lubbock and then back to Houston?

The article mentions that this airplane ride, which the university received at a discount, was the only expense related to the defensive coordinator search, so it seems that Kingsbury knew who he wanted and the feeling was obviously mutual.

In any event, we also find out that the remaining coaches did not receive any raises, although the coaches contracts are up on January 31, 2015, so theoretically, they could receive raises in a couple of weeks and I'd guess that they'll all get two year deals as well. Gibbs will make $550,000 per year on a two year deal and Spavital is to make $200,000 per year.

Make sure and go read the entire article.

Recruiting Links. Just a few recruiting items that I picked up this morning.

  • Per the LAJ, Lubbock Cooper's TE Evan McHugh (6-3/225) will have a preferred walk-on opportunity at Texas Tech.  You can check out his Hudl highlights and he had 57 catches for 869 yards and 8 touchdowns for Cooper.
  • Per NewsOK, Florida has offered Oklahoma offensive tackle Riley Daniel, which you might expect that Texas Tech might not have any spots left due to the fact they already have six five offensive linemen in the current class.
  • MikeTTU says to watch Greenville WR D'Erren Wilson (6-3/185), who the coaches are expected to visit today and assuming things go well, will offer soon.  Wilson was originally committed to SMU but decommitted and was previously at Bishop Dunne as a junior and at Greenville, he only had 24 catches for 730 yards and 10 touchdowns (those are some ridiculous yards and touchdowns per catch stats). You can check out Wilson's Hudl senior highlights.
