SCOUTING REPORT | Because I'm not a subscriber to anything, I have no idea what Giles is going to play as a Red Raider, but he can play receiver or as a defensive back. As slick as he is as a runner, I think I'd keep him on offense. As a quarterback, Giles looks to be a little mechanical, but he's actually pretty good as a thrower, but he's significantly better as a runner. Giles completed 152 of 250 passes for 2,107 yards, 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. On the ground, Giles only ran for 105 attempts and 885 and 18 touchdowns. The best word that I think he can use to describe Giles is that he's incredibly slippery as a runner and he seems to do find holes and make plays.
One other note about Giles is that he only ran for 240 yards as a sophomore and threw for the same number of yards, about 2,200. As explosive as an athlete he was as a runner, I'm surprised that he didn't run more as a quarterback. One possible explanation is that the coaches wanted him to be a passer first, as a sophomore, and that makes me think that he listens to his coaches, despite the instinct to run, and he's a player that works on his craft. Those are goth good things.
Long term, I like Giles ability to avoid tacklers and make plays and if it were me, I'd keep him on offense. He's built to be a receiver.
THE PLAYER SPEAKS | This is an update to the original article and Giles spoke with RaiderPower about his commitment and where he thinks he will fit (via RaiderPower):
"The Texas Tech coaches (one of which was assistant - running backs coach Mike Jinks) came by practice. They like the way I am a leader on and off the field," Giles told Vital. "They (and most other staffs as well) say I can play the inside or outside receiver spot. They want me to be able to make plays."
Jonathan, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
