The Lady Raiders are 3-0 going into their game this afternoon against the Morgan State Bears (2-2, 0-0 MEAC). The Lady Raiders (3-0, 0-0 Big12) had a tight and very aggresive game against Arizona (0-2, 0-0 PAC-12) and pulled out the win over the Wildcats (57-54).
Head Coach Candi Whitaker summed up the game in her opening statement:
"Happy to get a win, Arizona is a very athletic team that pressured us and got us out of a lot of our execution. It was good for us to go against that and see it. I'm proud of how we finished again. In the last eight minutes I felt like we really started to pick it up, make plays on both ends of the floor, rebound it better and obviously make good decisions in the last two minutes."
Texas Tech had four players in the double digits: Ivonne CookTaylor (13 pts), Dayo Olabode (11 pts) Kelsi Baker (10 pts) and Jocelyn Mousty (10 pts). Sophomore Center Mousty was also one of three Lady Raiders that had at least six rebounds: Baker (11 rebs), Mousty (6 rebs) and Jaimie Roe (6 rebs). Texas Tech leads the Big12 in 3-Point shots with a 41% (16/39) completion rate.
Now the aim is to beat the Morgan State Bears who are also very athletic. The game is at 2pm CST at the United Sprit Arena in Lubbock, TX. The game will be streamed on TexasTechTV and broadcast on the radio 97.3 FM Lubbock. This will be the first meeting between these two teams.
The Morgan State Bears have a powerhouse player, Senior Guard Tracey Carrington, who scores an average of 21 points per game and averages 5.8 rebounds. She is backed up by fellow teammates freshman Guard Braennan Farrar who averages 6.5 ppg, and is over 92% accurate at the free-throw line; Freshman Forward Tykyrah Williams who averages 8.8 ppg and 4.5 rpg; Sophomore Forward Jayde Duncan averages 2 ppg and is a strong free-thrower; Freshman Forward Lexus Spears adds over 4.8 ppg and brings down at least 5.5 rebounds per game.
The Starters for this afternoon's game are: Sophomore Guard Minta Spears who is averaging 11 ppg and is 80% accurate at the charity stripe; Junior (transfer) Guard Rayven Brooks adds 11.5 ppg and 3 rebounds and Assists; Freshman Forward Dayo Olabode at 6'2" who is averaging 8.5 ppg and 7.7 rebounds and 2 Assists; Senior Forward Kelsi Baker averages 14.7 ppg and 8.3 rebounds; and Junior (transfer) Forward Jamie Roe averages 7.5 ppg and 4.5 rebounds.
From Sophomore Center Joeclyn Mousty:
"I'm going to say energy. The first game we kind of started off lackadaisical but now we are starting to pick it up and work really hard. We are also starting to come together as a team, and the chemistry is only going to get better."
Keep the wins coming ..... Wreck'Em !!!!
