The Lady Raiders (1-0) started the season off with a solid win last Friday night. Tonight they go up against the Texas State Bobcats (1-0) at The USA at 7pm . The game will be streamed on TexasTechTV and broadcast on the radio 97.3 FM Lubbock. This will be the 13th meeting between these two teams with the Lady Raiders winning all of the previous 12 games.
The Texas State Bobcats are coming off a win over Texas A&M-International 83-65. The Lady Bobcats finished last season with a record of 16-16 finishing strong with a conference record of 12-6. The Texas State Bobcats enter the 2014-15 season with nine returners and four newcomers. Last season, the Bobcats earned an invitation to the WBI Tournament which marked the first postseason appearance for Texas State since the 2008 season. Texas State was picked to finish third in the Sun Belt Conference pre-season poll. The Lady Bobcats are led by Junior Guard Erin Peoples who is 6'0" and averages 10.4 ppg and 5.9 rebounds and is a consistent Blocker and causes numerous Steals each game. Junior Guard Ayriel Anderson averages 10.1 ppg, and has a 82% free-throw percentage and in one game last season she scored a record 31 points. The other starters are Junior Center Kileah Mays, (6'2") who averages 6 ppg and 4.4 rebounds; Senior Gaurs Meghan Braeuer, who averages 12ppg and makes over 74% from the charity-stripe; Senior Forward Jacquelin Jeffcoat (6'2") who averages 16 ppg and 14 rebounds.

I liked what I saw last Friday night when the Lady Raiders played their first game of the season. The Lady Raiders beat the Jacksonville State Gamecocks 67-59. This team showed gumption and team-work and aggressiveness that was lacking last year. There were three players that finished in the double-digits, Kelsi Baker had a record matching 18 points, newcomer Dayo Olabode had 14 points in her first college game and Minta Spears had 11 points on the night. This team will still be playing without the assistance of Amber Battle but after seeing how they played in the first game, I do not have as many concerns. Baker was aggressive and kept the energy high on the court and was assisted by newcomers Olabode, Rayven Brooks and Jamie Roe.
The Starters for tonight's game are: Sophomore Guard Minta Spears who averages 11 ppg and is 80% accurate at the charity stripe; Junior (transfer) Guard Rayven Brooks had 6 points and 3 rebounds and Steals in her first game; Freshman Forward Dayo Olabode at 6'2" had 14 points and 10 rebounds and 4 Assists in her first game; Senior Forward Kelsi Baker averages 18 ppg and 5.0 rebounds; and Junior (transfer) Forward Jamie Roe averages 9 ppg and 4 rebounds.
Keep the wins coming ..... Wreck'Em !!!!
Quote from HC Candi Whitaker on being exposed by another non-conference opponent.:
"I think all of them will give us great looks and put us in situations that we are going to have to defend or score or whatever it may be," Whitaker said. "But that's what you want out of your preseason games is be exposed and get better at those things with each and every game so that you're ready to go once Big 12 starts."
