Recruiting on the South Plains: 2015 DT Courtney Wallace Player Profile

Texas Tech received the 11th commitment from their 2015 class in Monroe's Courtney Wallace, a 6-3/309 defensive tackle.

US PRESSWIRE

This is perfect. Yes, absolutely perfect.

Obviously, as linked below, Wallace was on MikeTTU's radar, but this was completely unexpected for me personally and this is a huge commitment for Texas Tech, especially as part of the three-point plan that I outlined last week. Prior to the West Virginia game, I outlined a handful of positions that appeared to have some serious correlation between the 2011 season and this season, one of them being the lack of quality high school defensive tackles.

Either the coaching staff is listening (which I seriously doubt) or they see the same thing that I see, which is that the future defensive success of this team greatly depends upon the consistent recruiting of high school defensive tacles. Recruiting JUCO defensive tackles are okay, but the long-term success of a team is greatly dependent on having some quality numbers at the high school defensive tackle spot and now, with the commitment of Courtney Wallace, Texas Tech now has three defensive tackles committed.

Courtney Wallace, Jr. is the 11th commit of the 2015 class and the third defensive tackle, joining Breiden Fehoko and Broderick Washington. That's about 900 pounds of defensive tackle. High fives for everyone.

DL Courtney Wallace - Nike Camp Highlights

SCOUTING REPORT: Make sure and read Mike's take, which I think is spot-on.

The first thing is that Wallace plays on a relatively big high school team in Monroe, one of the better teams in Louisiana and plays alongside a big-time prospect in Rashad Lawrence, who is being offered by just about everyone. Wallace is no slouch and this isn't small-time football in Louisiana, this is big classification football.

The thing that jumps out at me is that Wallace is certainly a huge part of a dominating defensive line and he's not just a wallflower alongside a very talented teammate in Lawrence. Wallace does a terrific job of getting his hands on opposing offensive plays and he's quite athletic for a guy his size. Wallace plays up and down the line of scrimmage, from a 5-technique to a 1-technique.

Wallace does a good job of getting his hands on opposing offensive linemen and does a really nice job of shedding the offensive lineman quickly. It ssems like his leverage could use some work and from play to play, I really like his pad level and ability to get under the offensive player. I'm guessing that his strength still needs some work, but I love that 6-3 frame and the fact that Wallace is already over 300 pounds at such a young age bodes well for Wallace being a really good player in a few years. Now, it's just getting in that weight room and working on that strength.

One other note is this interview with Wallace and the recruiting service and training facility that he's using in Louisiana, which is that this video is from March of this year, which means that Kevin Curtis and Texas Tech have been out ahead on Wallace for the better part of 7 months.  That's really encouraging because that means that Texas Tech identified Wallace very early in the process and even had an offer out to him before anyone else.

Courtney, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
