NSD: Bryson Denley To Grayshirt, Austin Deshay No Longer A Texas Tech Commit

A few small surprises happened on National Signing Day.

Bryson Denley attended the LOI signing event at Cibolo Steele along side Texas Tech WR commit Antoine Wesley-Cox. It seemed like your everyday signing event, both commits dawned Texas Tech gear and flashed the Guns Up. Most of the media outlets reported that the two signed and that was that.

It was later reported that Denley in fact did not officially sign and that he will be a grayshirt. A grayshirt according to Recruiting-101 is when an athlete delays their enrollment so that their eligibility clock doesn't start ticking until they arrive on campus. In Denley's case, his situation must be grades related. Again this is just speculation but if it wasn't grades related and Texas Tech offered the gray shirt scenario I believe he would go elsewhere because he's a great player who had other offers. I expect Denley to attend South Plains College to get his grade in order and then join Texas Tech.

Bryson Denley | 5'10", 175 lbs | Athlete (RB, WR)

Steele High School (Cibolo, TX)

24/7: 85 | Rivals: 3-Star | Scout: 3-Star

First things first, Denley plays running back at Cibolo Steele but it has been reported he will play inside receiver for the Red Raiders. Since I am neither on the Red Raiders coaching staff nor have immediate ties to a coach I cannot confirm this, but at 5'10" and 175 pounds it would make sense if Denley slides over to play the slot. When given the ball on an off-tackle run play or pitch he can out run defenders to outside or he can make a cut and turn it up field. The same goes for when he catches a swing pass in the screen game. Once he gets past the first wave of defenders he has great field vision and can see the openings in the field or who he can make miss. Denley will make for a great addition at the slot position.

Another storyline I saw on the eve of National Signing Day was that DE Austin Deshay no longer held a scholarship from Texas Tech and was no longer committed.

Carlos Silva of 24/7 broke the news first and there hasn't been much else out regarding this situation. I'm not sure if this was an off the field issue or is the Texas Tech coaching staff just wanted to go in a different direction. I'm sure more information will come out on this story.
