Horned Frogs, Red Raiders. For the past few years, Tech and TCU have had some great baseball games, in the regular season and in Omaha. It started with a close loss in the Red Raiders’ College World Series debut. Tech got revenge last year by winning the season series in Ft Worth, in the infamous “Watergate” game. The series virtually clinched the Big 12 title for Tech and knocked TCU down. Then we met up again in Omaha, the game most Tech fans would rather forget ever happened. Currently both teams are projected to be national seeds for the tournament, and could meet in Omaha again. First however, there is Lubbock.
2017 TCU Horned Frogs
One of the biggest story lines coming into this weekend is each team’s star pitcher. Davis Martin went down in the Wichita St series with tendinitis and it was just announced this week that he has started throwing again. There has not been a timetable for his return, only that will be week to week. For the Frogs, their top starter Jared Janczak was sat down last week due to shoulder soreness and would be out at least a couple weeks. Both teams will be without their Friday night ace and the series could turn on the depth and quality of each bullpen.
Coming in to the 2017 season, TCU was predicted to challenge Tech as the top team in the conference, and they have generally held up as one of the top teams in the nation. They swept the SEC teams in the Shriner’s Classic and their only conference series loss was in Morgantown. Currently they are ranked 5th in the nation by D1 Baseball, and are 11th in RPI.
