For some, this boom of a season by our Red Raider baseball team is a refreshing change a pace. Although, for the most ardent of fan, this was somewhat to be expected. Tim Tadlock has been nothing short of a godsend to Lubbock and we should enjoy the fact this is as good as it gets.
I currently sit in my living room enjoying Steven Gingery toss yet another quality start, but I can’t help but wonder what the ceiling for this particular team is. Many local pundits rattle off that Davis Martin and Gingery are a top 2 punch that can go toe-to-toe with anyone in America. That our lineup top to bottom lacks any true weakness, and that we have a master tactician in Tadlock pulling the strings.
Yet, why is this team different?
You have to dig hard in the record books to see a Tech team have this elite of a pitching staff. In the history of the program, we’ve never once seen a sub 3.00-ERA for the whole staff. As things stand currently, we lay at a 2.92 (and rapidly dropping). For those that watch on TV, close to 8 of our pitchers throw 90+MPH. People - this is how UT won the CWS so many years, and became a national powerhouse.
I get it, nobody wants us to be compared to Texas. Although, that’s elite company that we’re starting to trend towards.
Impressively, this 2017 Tech team has had their best start in the history of the program. Depending on which poll you’re a fan of, your Red Raiders sit as high as #3 nationally. Is it realistic to see us ascend to #1 for the second time in school history? We have to go back to the days of Joe Dillon, Stubby Clapp, and Larry Hayes (aka 1996) to see that kind of success.
For us scoreboard watchers we’ve seen Louisville start to wobble, TCU flinch, and Oregon State likely to lose a game or two versus Arizona. Should the stars align, and we take advantage against the Shockers, at least for a week, we can (potentially) lay came to being the best team in the NATION….
Cheers to us Red Raider Fans.
