Texas Tech Basketball Tale Of The Tape: #6 West Virginia (15-3, 4-2)

The Red Raiders and Mountaineers square off for an early 12:00 PM tip.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Texas Tech finally got back on track with a win against TCU this past Monday. West Virginia on the other hand has lost two straight and are 0-1 after jumping up to #6 in the latest polls. Will Texas Tech pull off the upset or will West Virginia look like their old selves?

Check out the game on ESPN News at 12:00 PM!

WVU Key Players

Category Stat Name
Points/Game 13.9 F Devin Williams
Rebounds/Game 8.8 F Devin Williams
Assist/Game 3.1 G Jevon Carter
3pt Made/3pt % 28/79, 35.4% G Jevon Carter
Free Throw % 83/115, 72.2% F Devin Williams

West Virginia has two rebounding machines in Devin Williams and Jonathan Holton. Williams averages 8.8 rebounds a game and Holton brings in an average of 7.4 himself. It will be interesting to see how Aaron Ross and Matthew Temple match up with the Mountaineers' big men. One bright note for the Red Raiders is that West Virginia is not a great 3-point shooting team. Jaysean Paige and Jevon Carter have taken the most 3s for WVU but yet Paige averages only 38% and Carter is at 35.4%.

Last 5 Games

1/4 TCU W 95-87
1/9 Oklahoma St W 77-60
1/12 #1 Kansas W 74-63
1/16 #2 Oklahoma L 70-68
1/20 Texas L 56-49

The Mountaineers started the year off hot only losing one game in their first 16 contests and that was to #10 Virginia. West Virginia has now lost its last two games to #2 Oklahoma and Texas. Last week WVU upset #1 Kansas and only lost to #2 OU by two points. The Mountaineers looked like one of the best teams in the country but then fell to Texas in their last game. It will be interesting to see which team shows up. It'll also be interesting to see what Texas Tech's game plan is without Norense Odiase.

Prediction

Texas Tech 69 - West Virginia 72

The Red Raiders got a nice win against TCU but are now rewarded with a tough opponent in the Mountaineers. As I mentioned above, WVU looked like one of the best teams in the nation after last week but got caught off guard by Texas. After the Texas upset it gave me more hope that Texas Tech can also pull it off. I look forward to it being a good game as long as Aaron Ross and Matthew Temple can step up in Odiase's absence.
