Red Raider Gridiron: Recruiting Battles and Quan Shorts has Surprise Visitors

Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

The DMN breaks down five recruiting battles for Texas Tech and Texas Tech commit Quan Shorts has some surprise visitors leading up to National Signing Day.

Recruiting Battles. DMN's Tommy Magelssen has his top five recruiting battles, including DT Darrion Daniels, CB Henry Black, DE Joseph Wicker, LB Arthur McGinnis and RB Chris Warren. Magelssen is predicting good news for Daniels and McGinnis and here's the big for McGinnis:

McGinnis, ranked four stars by Rivals and three by 247 sports, is an edge rusher the Red Raiders will need in the future. Star outside linebcaker Pete Robertson will exhaust his eligibility after the 2015 season, leaving the door open for his replacement. Robertson led the Big 12 in sacks, and you better believe Texas Tech would like that to be a theme for someone on its defense each year. He recently visited Lubbock, and he had this to say to Scout.com: "Everything I saw fit the bill of something I'm looking for in any school that I want to go to. Plus, it's not that far from home and they have a young coach who is doing things and putting the program back on the map."

Shorts Talks Red Raiders. Your Houston News has a bit on Furquan "Quan" Shorts and the visits that the coaches made to Atascocita high school and it's cool to see that Shorts thought that the only coach that was going to be visiting him at Atascocita would be running backs coach Mike Jinks, but he got a surprise:

Originally Shorts thought just Texas Tech Associate Head Coach and Running Backs coach Mike Jinks would be visiting him one final time before National Signing Day.

But Jinks was not alone.

Standing beside Jinks was Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury, which excited Shorts because he got the chance visit with his future head coach and introduce him to his teachers and current coaches on the visit.
"It means a lot, it means to me that he cares and he really wants me in his program and I want to be in his program," Shorts said. "I feel like it's a great opportunity for me even though it's a little bit ways away, but I'm excited about the future."

Miscellaneous. Congrats to Terrence Steele for being named the 2nd team all state for Texas Football (congrats!) . . . Campus Insiders, which I think is an off-shoot of Scout in some form or fashion maybe, has their 2015 preseason Big 12 rankings and it is essentially the rankings as things ended up at the end of 2014 . . .
