STATS | From the scout profile it mentioned that Johnson had 72 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery and 9 passes defended.
THE PLAYER SPEAKS | Via the DMN, via RRS, Johnson talked about why he committed to Texas Tech:
"What I liked about Tech the best was all the coaches are all young and are together as a family," Johnson told RedRaiderSports.com. "Everyone down there seems like a family. They treat you very well down there. All of the players are happy down there. I talked to a bunch of the players to see how they liked it and they love it. Everything down there is amazing, really."
And from the LAJ, Johnson focuses on how he liked the coaching staff:
"Really my visit was amazing," Johnson said. "I enjoyed everything up there. The coaches, they were all great dudes and just really everybody down there is just happy. All the players, they all enjoy it. Everybody down there is all about Texas Tech. It’s a very nice city. I just felt like that’s where I want to be."
SCOUTING REPORT | The cool thing about Johnson is that he's the son of former Dallas Cowboy, Keith Davis. Surprisingly, I haven't really been able to find much about Johnson and Davis other than the this link that said that Davis didn't want to be the focus of attention, which is pretty neat. The only thing that I didn't understand was the reference to "alligator bloodlines". I have no idea what that is.
So I think this is a pretty big commit for this staff, in particular Kevin Curtis. There's really a lot to like about this commit as well as this seems incredibly similar to Derrick Dixon in terms of size and play. If anything, I think this might signal a concerted effort for this staff in terms of the type of safety that they want. Don't care too much about size, but do very much care about being rangy and fearless. Those things seem to describe Johnson.
Johnson is also a punt returner, so he's versatile, also like Dixon. And now that I'm thinking about it, this is also similar in player-type to Joseph Clark as well. I'm guessing they are all pretty similar in terms of height, weight and speed.
I think this is a plan.
Jah'Shawn Johnson, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
