Texas Tech Takes Game 1 from TCU 7-3

The Red Raiders get an excellent start from Davis Martin to beat the Horned Frogs in Ft Worth

1. Red Raider of the Game

Junior outfielder Stephen Smith had a fantastic game, both at the plate, and in the field. He went 4-6, with a pair of singles, a 9th inning double to put 2 men in scoring position with only 1 out, and a 2-out 2 RBI triple in the 6th inning to push the Tech lead to 6-1. He also made a great diving catch in the 7th inning that was highlight worthy.

2. Play That Impacted the Game

With the Red raiders up 6-1 in the 7th inning, Gute led off the inning in a big way. He took the first pitch from TCU pitcher Drew Gooch way out of the park on a play Red raider fans have come to expect from the senior. Most of the runs scored by Tech in the game came from errors or walked batters, but this was a statement hit, showing the Frogs that Tech has the power to take them out.

3. Stat of the Game

16. Of starting pitcher Davis Martin's 19 outs he recorded, 16 came from the ground ball. When Martin is on his game, the ground ball is in play, and with a great infield that is 3rd in the nation in double plays turned, Tech made sure TCU never had a chance to get to Martin.

4. Forgotten Play of the Game

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Steinhagen struck out, but the ball got away from catcher Tyler Floyd and rolled down towards 3rd base with the runner headed to 1st. Floyd hurriedly threw the ball to Gute at 1st base and the throw was way off, allowing Steinhagen to get all the way to 3rd base. A 3-base error usually leads to runs, something you want to avoid in a close game. The next batter grounded out that scored Steinhagen and gave TCU a 1-0 lead.

5. Big Reason Tech Won the Game

The Red Raiders were able to play a complete game, getting a great pitching performance from Martin and Dugger, a solid outing at the plate with 14 hits that included 3 doubles, a triple, and a home run, and taking advantage of TCU errors that led to 4 unearned runs. It was a great game after last weekend's series loss to Texas, and gives Tech a 3-game lead in the conference race.

Game 2 is scheduled to start at 4:00pm today, with the game televised on Fox Sports Southwest Plus
