The Lady Raiders (13-9, 3-7 Big12) came up short to beat the Kansas Wildcats in Lawrence, KS on Wednesday. The rising player and player of the game was Ivonne CookTaylor. She had 23 points and 5 rebounds in the game. Rayven Brooks stepped up to the plate too with 15 points and 5 rebounds. As stellar as Amber Battle was the week before, this was her off game. She only scored 3 points and had 2 rebounds. If you review the stats for this game Tech should have won this game ..... between more points-in-the-paint, more Steals, more rebounds, more Assists, more 2nd-chance-points .... the one stat that killed us was the Free-throws we only made 7 of 12(48.3%) compared to Kansas 78.3% (18-23).
Head Coach Candi Whitaker on if Wednesday's game felt like the game in Lubbock between the two teams:
"I thought the game was very similar - without obviously the big lead at the half. But definitely similar in that we went into a slump as far as converting plays and they went into a big run. That happened last game and it happened in this game. We've got to find an answer for runs.
"I thought we had some good opportunities and at times I did think that we guarded them well for about 25 seconds and then we'd give up a penetrate and kick to an open shooter. Obviously you have to give Kansas credit for converting when they had the opportunities."
This afternoon the Lady Raiders take on the TCU Horned Frogs (13-8, 5-5 Big 12) at 1pm CST at University Recreation Center In Fort Worth, TX. This will be the 45th meeting with Tech leading the series 40-4.
The Horned Frogs are currently 4th in the Big12 in Scoring Offense (70%) but are in 9th place in Scoring Defense (67.8%). TCU is 2nd in free-Throws (76%) and in Steals (10.62 /game). TCU is in the 10th spot for both ReboundingOffense and Defense.
Emphasis today for the Lady Raiders will be to shut down the Junior Guard #14 Zahna Medley who averages 15.8 ppg, and makes an average of two 3-ptrs and has at least 4 Assists/game and is number one in the Big12 on Free-throws making over 85.5%. There has been a big change in the Starters for this game in that Minta Spears has been removed and Sophomore Guard #2 Ivonne CookTaylor has been given that spot. CookTaylor is averaging 8 ppg and 4.4rpg.
