Texas Tech Basketball Tale Of The Tape: Minnesota (3-1)

The Red Raiders face Tubby Smith's old team Minnesota today at 1:30 PM.

Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

Texas Tech picked up a win against Mississippi State 74-72. Devaugntah Williams led the Red Raiders in scoring with 15 points. The Minnesota Golden Gophers also won against Missouri State to set up a match up with Tubby Smith's previous team today at 1:30 PM. Tubby Smith actually scheduled Minnesota's spot in the Puerto Rico Tipoff and now he's playing his old team. Minnesota has one player left on its squad that Smith recruited.

Minnesota Key Players

Category Stat Name
Points/Game 17.5 F Joey King
Rebounds/Game 5.3 F Charles Buggs
Assist/Game 5.0 G Nate Mason
3pt Made/3pt % 15/26, 57.7% F Joey King
Free Throw % 7/7, 100% F Charles Buggs

Forward Joey King leads the way in scoring for the Gophers with 17.5 points a game. While Charles Buggs leads the team in rebounding, pretty much their entire starting 5 and key bench players average 3+ rebounds a game. Nate Mason has been slinging the rock around this year and leads the team with 5 assists a game. Joey King picks up a lot of his points each game by jacking up threes. He's averaged taking 6.5 threes a game.

Last 5 Games

3/12 Ohio State L 79-73
11/13 UMKC W 76-58
11/15 Louisiana Monroe W 67-56
11/19 Temple L 75-70
11/20 Missouri State W 74-69

Minnesota has started the season 3-1 but hasn't really played a solid basketball team besides Temple in which they lost 75-70. Don't get me wrong, the Gophers are playing some good basketball but haven't really been tested this year. This game will be a good test for both squads.

Texas Tech 69 - Minnesota 68

This isn't just another game, Toddrick Gotcher even tweeted out yesterday that this game was personal and they wanted to go get the win for Tubby Smith and his coaching staff. I expect this game to be very similar to the Mississippi State game as in it's going to be hard fought and neither team really ever pulls away. I see this coming down to the last few possessions.

After the team gets back from Puerto Rico, their next game is Saturday 11/28 at home against Hawaii.
