Matt Wells has been fired from his position of Head Coach at Texas Tech after a heartbreaking loss to Kansas State by a score of 25-24. Tech had a 14 point lead at half and squandered it to a Kansas State team that had lost eight straight conference games. It was a loss that left Tech fans and boosters feeling an all too familiar feeling of what could’ve been.
For some this has been a long time coming, but for others, the loss on Saturday was the final straw. Under Wells, Red Raider Football had a 13-17 record overall and 7-16 in Big 12 play, finishing ninth in his first year and eighth last year. Wells also had recruiting classes of eighth, ninth, and dead last respectively.
Offensive Coordinator Sonny Cumbie will take over as Interim Head Coach immediately. Cumbie is a name that will get some chatter from Tech fans if the team seems to respond to his coaching down the stretch. However, with the brutal back half of the schedule left it seems unlikely this move does anything other than jump start the coaching search early.
Sonny Dykes, Jeff Traylor, Graham Harrell, and Jamey Chadwell are just a very rough preliminary list of coaches who could all receive some level of attention. They would also all likely be very exciting hires for the fanbase, besides all having high chances of success in Lubbock. Whoever Kirby Hocutt chooses, this will be his third football hire after two failures. It is critical not just for the program’s health but also for Hocutt’s career that this hire goes the right way.
