Texas Tech Recruiting Roundup, 3/31

The Red Raiders lost an o-line commit, so who do they target now?

Late Tuesday night 2017 OL commit Tyler Castaneda decommitted from the Red Raiders. Tyler of course is the younger brother of Robert who is an offensive linemen for Texas Tech. The younger Castaneda had been committed to the Red Raiders since 2014 and his decommitment was the second this month (Jalen Reagor). Texas Tech was quick to offer another linemen though and this one just might be even better. I'll take a look at him, a WR who recently decommitted from Baylor and a New Mexico running back who is gaining a ton of interest from schools across the country.

Xavier Newman | 6'3", 280 lbs | Offensive Line

DeSoto High School (DeSoto, TX)

24/7  | Rivals NR | Scout

Newman made quite the name for himself at The Opening Dallas Regional. He finished the day by being named the Offensive Linemen MVP and earned an invite to The Opening Finals where he'll be competing along side Jack Anderson. Texas Tech offered Newman on 3/30, the day after Castaneda decommitted, but the Red Raiders were showing him interest before that. As of now, Newman holds 18 offers so it'll be interesting to see how the coaching staff can get the ball rolling to gain some Texas Tech interest. It looks as though he'll play guard at the next level, he'd fit right in on the Red Raiders line.

Jhamon Ausbon | 6'3", 215 lbs | Wide Receiver

IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL)

24/7  | Rivals | Scout

Ausbon surprisngly decommitted from Baylor this week. At the beginning of the year Ausbon transferred to IMG Academy from St Thomas in Houston. It looked like he was going to IMG to join fellow Baylor commit QB Kellen Mond after Mond transferred there himself in late December. According to 24/7, Ausbon is the 11th best wide receiver recruit in the nation. He'd be an explosive threat on the outside for the Red Raiders but I'm sure some big name programs will come calling for his services now. Texas Tech offered him in mid-February so hopefully the coaches have been chatting him up since then. It is noted though that he decommitted from Baylor a day after visiting Texas A&M.

O'Maury Samuels | 5'11", 190 lbs | Running Back

Los Lunas High School (Los Lunas, NM)

24/7  | Rivals NR | Scout

Like Newman above, Samuels showed out at The Opening Dallas Regional. Samuels took home the RB MVP honors and tested out of the roof with a score of 142.41. Those achievements earned him an invite to The Opening Finals and 5 new offers. Going into The Opening camp in Dallas, Samuels only had 1 offer from New Mexico State but now holds 6 in total. Some of his newest offers are from Arizona, Michigan and TCU and with his proximity to Lubbock it's only a matter of time for Texas Tech to offer him. Samuels looks like a men among boys in his highlights below. He's not only fast but he's powerful. Him and Corey Dauphine could be the future at running back for the Red Raiders.

After Castaneda's decommitment, Texas Tech's 2017 recruiting class now sits at 3 after being at 5 only a few weeks ago. As I've mentioned before, the cycle is still early but if it gets into late July and the class is still sitting at around 5 I might start to worry. We saw how Kliff and crew got some under the radar guys last year after seeing them perform at camps and I expect them to do the same this summer.
