The Lady Raiders (15-10, 5-8 Big12) pulled out a win over the on Sunday in a game that went into overtime. The MVP of the game was Rayven Brooks with 26 points and 5 Assists and she played 40 minutes of the game. There was also Amber Battle who went down hard on a twisted ankle and looked like she was going to be out the rest of the season when she could not put any weight on her leg as she was helped off the court. But she returned in less than 5 minutes, after getting her ankle taped up, to help the Lady Raiders fight back and get the last shot to take the game into OT. The overtime period was sparked by Dayo Olabode and Battle and Brooks added in some points too. It was a team effort and the Lady Raiders had a 54% FG% for the game and when it mattered in OT it was 75%. This was a great away game win and the Lady Raiders are working as a team more and more and are making better angled shots and are more confident on the court. Final score was Texas Tech 74, Kansas State 68.
Head Coach Candi Whitaker on her opening statement in the post-game presser:
"Great game, I thought, both ways and fun to watch and be a part of and there was a little more scoring this time by both teams. Obviously, a huge win for us to come on the road and walk away with this one is huge. I thought we did a great job understanding their zone and how we were going to attack it. We were patient, and we found seams. We dribble-attacked it more. Last time we looked to pass it a little too much. I thought we did a good job of sharing the basketball and knocking down open shots and kind of countering what their zone does to you. And we had a good day. Rayven Brooks shot it extremely well and a lot of people stepped up and made shots when we needed them to."
Tonight the Lady Raiders take on the #3 Baylor Bears (24-1, 12-0 Big12) at 7pm CST at "The USA" in Lubbock, TX. This will be the 79th meeting with Tech leading the series 47-32. Texas Tech leads the series in games played in Lubbock, 25-10, but Baylor has won seven of the last eight games in "The USA".
The Bears are currently 1st in the Big12 in Scoring Offense (81.9 ppg) and FG% (48%). They are even with Tech in FT% at 67%. Baylor is 2nd in the Big12 in Blocked shots averaging 5.8/game. The Bears are in 1st place in Assists averaging over 21/game. Baylor is a strong rebounding team averaging 15.96 Offensive rebounds and 30.32 Defensive rebounds per game. The one small are where the Bears struggle is in 3-pt shots only averaging 3.28/game.
The Bears are led by Sophomore Forward #13 Nina Davis who makes at least 21.4 ppg, 8.8 rpg. Davis is backed up by Sophomore Guard #20 Imani Wright who averages 10.3 ppg, and 3 rpg and is 73.5% accurate at the free-throw line. Sophomore Guard #12 Alexis Prince adds an average of 8.1 ppg and 4.3 rpg. Junior Guard #2 Niya Johnson averages 6.8 ppg, 5 rpg, 8.9 apg and is the Bears strongest free-thrower at 76.2% FT%. Senior Point Guard #22 Sune Agbuke averages 5.7 ppg and 5.4 rpg.
Team Defense will be the name of this game. The Lady Raiders are going to have to take each play one-at-a-time and try and play as cohesively as they can to outscore the Bears. This will be the ultimate test and challenge for this squad and I am hopeful they will be able to do what no other team has been able to do this season and beat the Bears. A solid and very physical game from all of the Lady Raiders will be needed tonight. Tech needs to control the pace and there needs to be an emphasis on ball control and staying a step ahead of Baylor.
The Starters for today's game are: Sophomore Guard #2 Ivonne CookTaylor is averaging 8.4 ppg and 4.4rpg; Junior (transfer) Guard #11 Rayven Brooks had 8 points and 3.4 rebounds and is currently ranked 12th and 11threspectively in the Big12 standings for Blocked Shots and Steals with 21 blocks and 38 Steals this season; Freshman Forward #32 Dayo Olabode makes 8 ppg and 6.2 rebounds and is currently 14th in the Big12 with an average of 6.2 rebounds per games (155 total this season); Junior Forward #35 Jamie Roe will start for the 2nd time.
