I have been thinking about the state of our football team and how the roster looks compared to other teams. As last season progressed and I watched our DL get pushed about, I wondered how we stacked up vs some of our opponents. I consistently saw that our DL had lesser numbers than our opponents, significantly so.
So today I looked deeper, here are the rosters for TTU, BU, TCU, OK, whorns, and UAB showing roster numbers.
Basically, I found a way to get rosters into Excel, then ran a pivot table report on each roster to get the comparisons. I was not always able to get the official rosters so I took what I could find. Some of the data is massaged in that some of the rosters show say, RB and FB, I changed that to RB, TE's were changed to WR's, Safeties and Cornerbacks to DB, anybody that put toe to leather was called K, DS was hidden, there are a few other classifications I hid but since the numbers were small, I chose to ignore them.
I have no way to differential walk-ons from scholarship players, I take it for the most part that the scholly guys are more talented so that could be interesting but there is too much data to try to get to that.
I also have the data on the spread sheet broken down by school year, i.e., FR, SO, JR, SR. The different rosters show them differently. Some do not show RSFR, OU shows RSFR, RSSO, etc. which is very accurate but out of sync with the other rosters. I don't know what I might do with these data yet, maybe just look at it and go crazy in my head !!!
Some of this is eye opening for me. How is there so much disparity in the numbers of players on rosters? I thought there is a limit !!
Anyway, I think the tables are interesting and kind of shows where we are against a solid group of comparison teams that I would like us to be able to compete against with great vigor.
Enjoy !!!
