Poll: What’s your dream conference for Texas Tech?

The year 2023 is expected to provide a major shift to conferences around the country. What is Tech’s best move?

NCAA Football: Texas at Texas Tech Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that nothing is predictable.

In that spirit, I’d like to gauge your predictions what’s going to happen when the 2023 conference realignment hits the NCAA.

Last realignment period, everyone was talking about how the Pac 12 was going to absorb the failing Big 12. Now, it looks like if any absorbing were to happen, it’d be the other way around. The Pac 12 is a disaster. No one watches the games in person or on TV. The money is laughable. Schools are looking to bail.

Regardless of what will happen, I’m curious to hear your opinions on what you want to happen.

I, personally, am deeply intrigued by the Mountain West Conference, which just signed a lucrative TV deal with CBS and FOX. It’s a conference heading in the right direction, unlike the Pac 12. What if some of the schools who jumped ship from the Pac 12 joined forces with some Big 12 programs to make a new, stronger Mountain West? Naturally, that new contract would have to be completely redone to accommodate the bigger incoming programs, but here’s my idea:

The new Mountain West (12 schools):

  • Arizona
  • Arizona State
  • Boise State
  • Colorado
  • Colorado State
  • Kansas
  • Kansas State
  • San Diego State
  • Texas Tech
  • TCU
  • Utah
  • Utah State

Imagine a road schedule where you visited Boulder, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and San Diego all in the same fall.

Each of these programs has its own unique strengths and almost all are consistently competitive. Plus we’d keep our growing rivalry with TCU, which would evolve into something beautiful as the only two Texas schools in the conference.
