Seven foot center Russel Tchewa will likely not be back at Texas Tech next season. The fan favorite bench player averaged 1.7 points in just 5.1 minutes per game in the 2019-2020 season. With the Tech roster just getting better next season, it makes sense that Tchewa will look for playing time elsewhere. Chris Beard is always adjusting his roster to make the team as competitive as possible. Before Tchewa entered his name in the portal, the team was over the scholarship limit by 3 players. Now the Red Raiders are still two players over, but Beard has plenty of time to adjust that.
Tchewa could return to the program, but I find this scenario highly unlikely. Tchewa’s departure could indicate a pursuit of a transfer big man, such as Matt Haarms who Tech has already had interest in. This is not a guarantee, but as a grad transfer Haarms would likely see much more playing time than Tchewa would have. This is one of the many expected roster shakeups that will happen this off season as Chris Beard attempts to make his already elite roster into a National Championship contender.
