It’s almost that time of the year again. Basketball season is quickly approaching, and I know Red Raider nation is ready to see another successful post-season run by these guys. But before we can think too far ahead, we have to face the here and now.
The Big 12 Conference preseason rankings was released, and I’m a little shocked to say the least. Texas Tech was selected to finish third in the conference this season behind the Kansas Jayhawks and the Baylor Bears.
Yes, you read that correctly...third. At first, I thought this was a huge insult to Texas Tech and what this program has accomplished over the past two years. However, after sitting down and doing some deep breathing exercises, I realized I understand both sides to this ranking.
Most of last seasons team is gone. This is just a hard fact. I have to believe it was the largest factor as to why Tech was picked to finish third. We had such a stacked roster full of intelligent, hardworking and talented Red Raiders that took us all the way to the National Championship game. That is something most of us (especially the Big 12) believed would never happen.
We will never forget the play by now Minnesota Timberwolf Jarrett Culver to get that team to March Madness. I know I will always remember watching how veterans Matt Mooney, Tariq Owens, Brandone Francis and Norense Odiase pushed the Red Raiders to that national title game and played their hearts out.
When you lose guys like that, I’m sure the Big 12 thought it wouldn't be possible for Texas Tech to have that same kind of season. I do get that mindset. However, aren't we underestimated ever season?
It’s not like this program has been left with scraps, or anything even remotely close to that. This isn’t me being biased or anything, well maybe a little, but I think this year’s team is going to be a force to be reckoned with.
Davide Moretti is a Red Raider household name at this point. He can pretty much do it all by forcing the ball down low or shooting that sweet jumper of his from three. Not to mention how then freshman Kyler Edwards stepped up big time during Tech’s March Madness run. So, we have some solid guys coming back from last season.
Also, I guess the Big 12 Conference forgot about coach Chris Beard and his recruiting ability? During the offseason, Beard acquired Virginia transfer Chris Clarke and Las Vegas transfer Joel Ntambwe. Two guys with experience under the bright lights to fill the gaps left from last seasons veterans.
Not to mention that the freshmen Red Raiders we have coming in are extremely talented. We have three-star recruit Clarence Nadolny, four-star recruit Terrence Shannon Jr and four-star recruit Jahmi’us Ramsey. What these newcomers lack in collegiate experience, they will surely make up for with the help of Beard, Moretti and others.
I know anyone's freshman season can be unpredictable. Again, I think that had to be a factor in our ranking. But like I said, these are no “scrubs”. All of these guys, transfers freshman, were heavily sought after. There may be some rough patches, but this team is going to be a cohesive unit. Just leave that up to raw talent and the guidance of the best coach in the conference.
This Big 12 ranking stirred the pot a bit, and I know a lot of fans think this is an insult because of what Texas Tech accomplished last season. In my eyes, it is a little bit. However, I understand their reasoning. In all honesty, I like being picked third. Red Raiders have always been known as the underdogs, and look how well it worked for us last season?
So bring it on. We aren't afraid of a little challenge. Keep doubting these guys. Fuel their fire to be even better than last season. I’m all here for it.
What do you think of Texas Tech’s preseason ranking?
