The 2OT: Does Texas Tech football need a little more excitement in 2018?

New, 1 comment

After the success of Texas Tech Athletics, will barely making a bowl game be enough to keep fans satisfied?

The Thought

It has been a big year for Texas Tech Athletics. The basketball team earned the program’s first NCAA Elite Eight trip and a second-place Big 12 regular season finish, a program-best. The excitement over the basketball team even brought ESPN’s College Gameday to visit. The baseball team is on it’s way to Omaha for the third time in five years. The track team finished their season as Big 12 champs. Golf was in the NCAA quarters. Tennis and softball both made their respective NCAA tourney. Volleyball made the title game of a postseason tournament. Football made a bowl game... barely.

After the success of all of these teams, will barely making a bowl game be enough to keep fans satisfied?

The Take

NCAA Football: Texas Tech at West Virginia Ben Queen-USA TODAY Sports

Let’s face it, if Kliff Kingsbury wasn’t the beloved Texas Tech alum that he is, he would be long gone. His best record was in his first year, when he took the Red Raiders 8-5, but defense in years since has put a damper on Texas Tech’s success. While defense did show some improvement in the 2017 season, offense struggled without Mahomes. To make matters worse, the 2018 Texas Tech football recruiting class was ranked last in the Big 12 and 79th in the nation. Fans are losing faith. While most years simply making a bowl game was an answer to all our prayers, the 2018 season needs a little more excitement. What do you think?
