Texas Tech Recruiting Roundup: Who's The Next Commit?

With the 2016 high school football season is under way, who is the next Red Raider commit going to be?

The 2017 recruiting class currently sits at 13 commits. Texas Tech's class ranks 41st in the nation according to 24/7, 43rd via Rivals and 47th if you check out Scout's rankings. The Red Raiders are primed to finish in the top 40 across all three sites if they end up with close to 25 solid-rated commits. It's been a month since Texas Tech has landed a commit and with football season starting, it could be another few weeks before another recruit pledges his services to the Red Raiders. Today I'll take a look at several guys who could be that next commit. I've covered a few of these guys before but if I was a betting man I believe one of these 3 will be the next recruit to call himself a Red Raider.

Dimitri Moore | 6'3", 200 lbs | Linebacker

Cedar Hill High School (Cedar Hill, TX)

24/7  | Rivals | Scout

The Red Raiders hosted Moore this off-season for a visit and by the looks of things online it looked like the visit went extremely well. I was convinced he was going to commit the Sunday of his visit. Last week, Moore and Cedar Hill played on national TV and he played great. He could see a few more offers based off of just that game. At the moment Moore holds 23 offers. In his film you can see that Moore plays off the edge and has the speed to run down ball carriers and cover receivers. It'll be interesting to see where he lines up at the next level. I could see him playing a similar role like Pete Robertson did for Texas Tech.

Devodrick Johnson | 6'2", 210 lbs | Athlete QB/S/LB

Kimball High School (Dallas, TX)

24/7  | Rivals | Scout

I covered Johnson back in the spring and at that time he wasn't rated across the three major recruiting sites and Texas Tech was his only Power 5 offer. Oh, how things can change. Johnson is now rated as high as a 4-star and holds 19 offers. He committed to Texas A&M in July but then decommitted August 8th. Maybe since Texas Tech was one of the first to discover his talent the Red Raiders are still high on his list. If Texas Tech were to land Johnson I think he'd play safety or outside linebacker. He's got a great build and looks very natural on the defensive side of the ball. In June, Texas Tech was listed in Johnson's top 10. Below are his highlights, Kimball's Hudl is private.

Cartrell Thomas | 5'9", 160 lbs | Wide Receiver

Lancaster High School (Lancaster, TX)

24/7  | Rivals | Scout

Lancaster has two playmakers at wideout with Omar Manning and Cartrell Thomas. Manning is the guy who gets most of the attention, but Thomas is great in his own right. I saw him for the first time at The Opening Dallas Regional and I immediately wanted him to be a Red Raider. In early August, Thomas released a top 6 that featured Texas Tech along with Boise State, Colorado, Illinois, Texas State and Utah. His crystal ball prediction is 100% Texas Tech on 24/7, so we'll see how everything plays out. He'd be a natural fit at slot and could contribute early. Fingers crossed Thomas ends up a Red Raider. Fast forward to 1:05 to see Thomas in action. Sorry, Lancaster's Hudl is private.

With Texas Tech's season about to get under way we will start to see recruits and current commits making their way out to Lubbock for games. I know that Jack Anderson and Dawson Deaton will be there against Stephen F. Austin and I expect some others to join them. This season good be a great recruiting tool if the Red Raiders have a solid year.
