Texas Tech Basketball Tale Of The Tape: Eastern Kentucky Colonels (1-2)

The Red Raiders play host to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday at 12:00 PM.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Texas Tech is now 2-0 on the year and have two blowout wins to start off the season. Up next is Eastern Kentucky out of the Ohio Valley Conference. Last year the Colonels went 15-16 but went only 6-10 in conference. So far, they're sitting at 1-2 this season and are coming off of two straight losses. Can Texas Tech make it 3 blowout wins in a row?

Tune into Fox Sports Southwest at 12:00 PM! You'll have a nice day of Texas Tech athletics with football kicking off at 2:30 against Iowa State.

Eastern Kentucky Key Players

Category Stat Name
Points/Game 22 F Nick Mayo
Rebounds/Game 10 F Zach Charles
Assist/Game 3.5 G Asante Gist
3pt Made/3pt % 4/7, 57.1% G Isaac McGlone
Free Throw % 18-18, 100% F Nick Mayo

*stats are through the first two games, they weren't updated yet at the time of this post*

Forwards Nick Mayo and Zach Charles lead the way for the Colonels. Eastern Kentucky are young at the guard spot with freshman Asante Gist leading the way in assists per game. Luckily for the Red Raiders, they are pretty solid at every position across the board. I expect the Texas Tech big men to keep Mayo and Charles in check.

Last 5 Games

2/25 Jacksonville State W 76-54
2/27 Tennessee Tech L 92-82
11/11 IUPUI W 97-87
11/14 UNC Wilmington L 78-69 OT
11/17 Auburn L 85-64

The Colonels opened the season with a 10-point win over IUPUI but have now lost two straight. They played Auburn Thursday night and stuck with the Tigers throughout the first half of the game, but Auburn pulled away in the second half. With the quick turn around and trip to Lubbock, I don't expect Eastern Kentucky to have fresh legs in this matchup.

Prediction

Texas Tech 82 - Eastern Kentucky 59

The Red Raiders are getting things rolling, and I don't expect this to be a close one. Aaron Ross and Anthony Livingston are playing very well down low and I anticipate them having another great game. If you're in Lubbock, make sure you come out and support the Red Raiders!
