VTM Staff Predictions: Texas Tech at Iowa State

The Red Raiders find themselves in a must-win game against the Cyclones.

Rob Ferguson-USA TODAY Sports

Here we are folks. The Red Raiders have to win their last two games to make a bowl game. First up is the Iowa State Cyclones. The Cyclones, who are 2-8, host Texas Tech in Ames. As we all know, Ames can be a dangerous place to play. Don't let their 2-8 record fool you either, the Cyclones have improved this season. Can the Red Raiders walk out with a win or will the Cyclones play bowl-game-spoiler?

Drew Parker

Iowa State in Ames. Iowa State is one of those teams that you never really have a feel of how good they are gonna be, because they never have a great record, but they always seem to play teams tough at home. However, I think handle them with relative ease, 42-24 win for Tech.

It's win or go home for the Red Raiders from now on. They need to win on Saturday if they want to play past November 25th. Fortunately they're playing a 2-8 Cyclones team they have beaten every year since 2012. Iowa State has played teams like Baylor and Oklahoma State close, but couldn't seal the deal. They will come into this game with a lot of confidence that they can knock off Tech. The 2014 game was close and I expect the same this year with Texas Tech coming out on top. They keep their bowl eligibility hopes alive and improve to 5-6.

Traveling on back to back weeks late in the season is hard on a football team. Texas Tech will have to be focused and ready when they travel to Iowa State after the emotional loss at OSU. The implications of the game are pretty clear. Win and you are still alive for a bowl game or lose and the season is a complete disappointment.  I think ISU’s first year head coach Matt Campbell was a great hire, but Tech should survive the rebuilding project in Ames, Iowa.

Texas Tech's advantages are that they're the more talented team and have more to play for with bowl eligibility on the line. Iowa State's advantages are a "nothing to lose" mentality and home field advantage, combined with a cold forecast for Saturday afternoon. I've been pessimistic about Texas Tech lately, mostly predicting losses, but I think they'll be able to pull this one out. It may not be pretty, but the Red Raiders will live to die another day.

Iowa State is better than what they let on. This team has played some good games but have come out on the losing end. I do think Texas Tech wins, but I feel like it'll be closer than what people think. In the end, Mahomes and company are just too much for the Cyclones.

Texas Tech 42, Iowa State 38

Average Final Score: Texas Tech 42, Iowa State 29

As a staff, we're calling for a 13-point victory. What do you say VTM viewers? Do the Red Raiders win by double-digits or will this be a closer game than what people think?
