[The soft crackle of a needle first hitting a record is heard. The vinyl-warmed voice of The Reverend Al Green starts drifting from an unseen speaker]
Hey, girl.
The last two years have been something else, haven't they?
Our seasons haven't gone as well as they could have. The promise and shine from after my first campaign may have worn off a bit after what happened this year, but hey. We're still here. You and me. And I can't tell you how much I appreciate your sticking with me through these tough times.
And truthfully, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. They said it's hard to recruit in Lubbock; I've had difficulties, for sure. We've lost a few of the big fish, but we've landed a couple, too. However, those recruits don't really matter all that much, in the long run. These kids will come and go. But you and I are Red Raiders, and nothing in God's creation will ever change that.
Have I told you lately how good your fandom looks on you? I always thought scarlet was your color. You've always worn it better than me, especially in your cheeks when I catch you staring. [Raspy chuckle]
Your passion is truly the best part of my job. It's what makes me want to out-work every other coach in this damn conference, just to make you proud. I see you cheering when I wake up in the morning, when I'm working plays on the wipe board at midnight, and most importantly in the stands on game day.
So Happy Valentine's Day to you, beautiful. I know things haven't always been great, but I promise you that every day I am striving to be better for this university. And for you.
So let's stay together.
Yours always,
Tubby
