This year's initial Blog Poll was released earlier in the week. I saw the all-points-bulletin to sign up delivered by Brian last week, but then I started thinking, am I worthy? First, I do meet certain requirements: I have a blog and I've been blogging for 11 months (including DTN and the old crappier blog). As with most things in my life, I meet the bare minimum, but do I watch enough football?
There's no doubt that I feel like I am pouring myself into my university, just as most bloggers do. In fact, my wife lets me spend an incredible amount of time in front of the computer so there's no real complaints on my end. But I'll be real honest, I don't get to watch as much football as I'd like to watch on the weekends. Like most married guys, I end up spending a good portion of my fall weekends working around the house and generally keeping my wife at bay by doing the bare minimum. Granted, I'm not real sure what this makes me, other than a guy who knows that he's got a pretty good thing going (i.e. she leaves me alone while I'm at the computer and watching sports, but I must do mindless work around the house). She knows that I designate quite a bit of time to watching the Red Raiders and the Dallas Cowboys, but all bets are off for anything after that.
So here's the rub, I don't watch that much college football, or rather, not as much college football as I would like. In fact, I can't remember when I watched an entire Auburn, Penn State, South Carolina, Wisconsin or California game. It's not that I don't want to watch those teams, I'd love to, but I just haven't. And it doesn't stop there, there's a ton of teams that I can't recall sitting down and watching last year. There's a couple of things that I do to keep up with all of those teams: I read as many team and college football blogs that I can and I still study boxscores like I did when I was 12 years old.
But is that enough?
It's not that I don't want to participate, but rather, would I be any better than the coach who hasn't watched any other team play other than his own, or the sportswriter who has done his homework for the week and paid attention to as much football as he possibly can?
My plan this fall is to be a little more diligent about watching as many games and teams as possible, but at what point do I become an expert? Don't get me wrong, I could fake the entire process and look at the consensus of the other voters, the AP and Coaches Poll and turn out something that is respectable, but wouldn't that be going against the idea of what the Blog Poll is supposed to be?
As I said above, I'm sure that I'm over-thinking this whole thing and no one cares about whether or not I fee like I'm qualified or not, but it's about making sure that I'm taking this seriously enough to be a qualified voter. I'll stop talking now and leave everyone else alone.
