Today is a good day as Texas Tech has hired Dan Spencer as the new Associate Head Coach in charge of pitching/catching and recruiting coordinator and Trent Petrie as the new Assistant Coach in charge of the infield and will also assist in recruiting.
Jake, at Building the Dam, has done a marvelous job of covering this story, also has the audio from the press conference.
Coach Hays on the hire of Coach Spencer:
I think this is a great hire for Tech. Spencer is arguably the best college pitching coach in America and he seems primed to be a force in the Big 12. Just listening to the audio, I think kids are going to love playing for him and he has an expectation to win.
This is a little off topic, but is anyone else starting to see a pattern here with some of the recent hires by AD Myers? Doesn't it seem that Myers is going out and hiring, or in some cases retaining (see Coach Leach), some extremely talented coaches? Of course it helps that some of his hires have local ties, but Myers is doing a hell of a job here. I consider it somewhat of a coup that Myers got Spencer in Lubbock, not to mention that Myers has been able to keep Leach from some of the bigger fish and secured the services of Pat Knight who I think is going to be a terrific hire is nothing short of spectacular. I wonder if the remainder of the Big 12 is taking notice, but those are all talented coaches.
