Pen has been put to paper and the former Red Raider is headed to LA to join Clay Helton and company at USC. Kliff Kingsbury will be taking over as the offensive coordinator and QB coach for the Trojans next season.
But why would Kingsbury take a job knowing that the current coach is on the hot seat?
It’s no secret that Clay Helton, the current head coach of the USC Trojans, is on the hot seat at USC. Helton is currently coming off a dismal five win season and is 32-17 as the head ball coach for the Trojans. USC has not had a losing season since 2000, and Helton needed to shake things up in order to save his job. Enter Kliff Kingsbury. USC ranked second to last in total offense this year in the PAC 12 and Helton had almost no choice but to give Kliff Kingsbury a call. But could Helton have accidentally just hired his replacement? You have to think that Kingsbury has a master plan here..
What to expect from a Kingsbury led USC Offense
I expect play calling duties to be given to Kingsbury, but I don’t necessarily expect to see the traditional Mike Leach air raid offense. Kingsbury ran the ball more than ever last season, and I expect Helton to want more of the same. This will cause Kliff Kingsbury to grow as a coach and play caller. That being said, Kingsbury has a ton of talent that will move the football. Expect sophomore JT Daniels to improve quickly under the guidance of Kingsbury. Daniels has plenty of weapons to throw to as well. Michael Pittman Jr. and budding star Amon-Ra St. Brown, both accounted for 700 yards a piece, and sophomore Tyler Vaughns was not far behind. Kingsbury should be able to do just enough with this talent to be considered for the head coaching gig, when Helton inevitably gets fired.
I fully expect Kingsbury to be offered a head coaching position at USC.
Let me paint you a picture here. USC ‘s offensive production jumps significantly next season. However, they do not have a complete turnaround and only manage to win eight games. Clay Helton is fired. USC turns to the one thing that worked for them in the previous season. Kliff Kingsbury.
Until then, cue all the bad media jokes comparing Kliff Kingsbury to Ryan Gosling again..
GIFs, however, are the key to my heart. So I’ll let this one slide.
