The world was introduced to Avery Benson when the Red Raiders defeated the then No. 1 ranked Louisville Cardinals in December. He had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 1 steal against the then top-ranked team in the land and was interviewed after the game on National Television. That man is now on full scholarship.
Yesterday my dreams came true and I was able to earn a full Athletic scholarship here at Texas Tech! I love this family more than anything! Thank you to every Coach, Player, GA, and Manager that has helped me! #wreckem #4:1 pic.twitter.com/6rccuPCso6

Benson hasn’t been a superstar for the Red Raiders this season, but he has been averaging about 10 minutes per game and has often been the first Red Raider off the bench this season. He has been pretty efficient while he has been on the floor as he is shooting 7 of 15 from behind the arc and his a perfect 7 of 7 on his free throws.

This guy has been about the grind since he got on campus in 2017 and has now carved himself a role in Beard’s rotation. His toughness is something that is infectious on this team as when he gets aggressive the team seems to as well.

First ever win over a top-ranked team and doing it without Jahmi'us Ramsey.

This now allows Benson to stay and not have to worry about paying for college the remainder of his time at Texas Tech. This also brings Tech’s scholarship total to 13 for next season, meaning that no one can be added to the 2020 signing class during the later signing period.

With his experience in this program, Benson will have the ability to impart his toughness and knowledge of the game onto incoming recruits for the foreseeable future as he has two seasons left in Lubbock. We may not see him in an NBA jersey one day but we will see him affect the careers of many who will be in the NBA with his longevity in this program and the skills he has to teach to the newest Red Raiders.
