At the end of an otherwise forgettable season, Tech’s win against Baylor proved to be a glimpse at the light at the end of the tunnel. However, one question still remains. How long will the tunnel last? Are you picking up what I’m putting down? Was Tech’s big win in Jerry World a sign of this program turning on a dime, or is it going to be like turning a 30 car long train going at full speed?
I think everyone can agree that last Friday night wasn’t a fluke, but instead a look at the potential that this team holds. Despite out 5-7 record, I am excited to see what next season may bring. So, without further ado, here are my way-too-early bold predictions for Texas Tech’s 2017 football season.
Mahomes Will Be Back
Clearly this prediction might make this article irrelevant before we even get started, but I have a hunch that he will be back. I don’t know what tells me that other than I just have a feeling. He says he wants to bring a Big 12 title to Lubbock, now let’s see it happen. As for predictions, I believe if he comes back he will be invited to the Heisman Trophy presentation in New York. I’m not saying that he is going to win it, but he will be within a stones throw away from it.
Tech’s Defense Will Be A Top 65 Defense
This might prove to be the boldest prediction of this article. We have been saying for years that if we had any sort of a defense, it would propel Texas Tech into the next level. If the performance that we saw against Baylor is a sign of things to come it could turn out to be an exciting season. It’s Kliff’s 5th year, and Gibbs 3rd year, and we all know it’s probably a make or break season for both. I am optimistic that it is going to be both of those guys breakout year. More continuity, more recruits, more stability, more success. Call me crazy, but we could be in the top half of all FBS defenses.
Nine Win Season
Boy, yet another doozie of a prediction. This seems like a pretty tall order after what we saw this season, and indeed it is. However, like Hocutt, I believe in Kliff. Everyone and their grandma knows that he is coaching for his job, and that kind of pressure causes people to take calculated risks in big time moments to win big time games. Hopefully these “calculated ricks” will cause the ball to bounce our way in some of these close games.
Tech Will Average One Turnover Per Game
David Gibbs prides his defense on takeaway’s, and it doesn’t take a genius to know that we didn’t rack up many through-out this season. We stole the ball 4 times (not counting turnover on downs) against Baylor, and I expect more of that in the future. We have some emerging young studs on defense, and they are only going to get better. If our defense plays with as much passion as they did against Baylor, I don’t see any reason why we can’t achieve this goal.
Who Really Knows?
These could either all be crazy accurate, or they could all get blown out of the water. For Kliff, and our football programs sake, I hope I’m not that wrong. I think this team has a ton of potential, but you still have to execute. I’m already looking forward to early September, I just hope I won’t be let down. Guns Up, and Wreck’em Tech!
