Coach Wells has made his presence known on the recruiting trail and it has continued to be felt as the Red Raiders secure a commitment from 3-star JUCO prospect Jason Lloyd, a tight end from the College of San Mateo. The 6’4, 245-pound rising sophomore was first team all-state and all-conference for the Bulldogs this past fall. Lloyd had 200 yards receiving and one touchdown in his freshman season CSM in 2019. Here’s my analysis on Lloyd and how he stacks up against the other tight end commits coming in this fall.
While seemingly undersized, Lloyd uses his strength and speed to fend off defenders in jump ball or tight coverage scenarios. He also has the ability to transition out wide, or into a “wing” position as well as down in a three-point stance seamlessly and get himself open during otherwise broken plays. Lloyd also has a natural ability to block, knocking down defenders with little to no effort.
The Red Raiders also have another tight end coming in this fall as part of the 2020 class in John Holcomb, another 3-star recruit coming out of Wellington High School in Wellington, Texas. The 6’5, 215-pound prospect rarely saw time in a true tight end set, but was rather posted up outside as an outside receiver as well as down in a three-point stance as a fullback. Holcomb does have a great ability to catch the football and he will absolutely bulk up more during Tech football’s fall camp and as the season goes on, but I believe it will take him some time to get used to being in a three-point stance a lot of the time he’s on the field.

Going into the 2020 season, I believe that Jason Lloyd will be the one to take on the lion’s share of tight end duties over Holcomb, giving the freshman a chance to gain some more muscle over the course of the fall.
