There is only 79 days until Texas Tech football kicks off against Ole Miss in Houston, and today we will talk about number 79, Travis Bruffy.
Bruffy has played in 23 games as a Red Raider, and started 11 of them at Left Tackle. He was a key part in improving Texas Tech’s running game, as the Red Raiders increased their rushing average by 40 yards per game from 2016 to 2017. Bruffy is expected to be named a starter on the improved and experienced offensive line for Texas Tech.
Bruffy is most known for his Piesman highlight (offensive or defensive lineman making plays) from 2016 vs. Oklahoma State. Late in the second quarter, the Red Raiders were down seven in the red zone. Bruffy lined up with the number 90 jersey, ensuring he was eligible to be a receiver, then promptly caught a five yard pass from Patrick Mahomes for a trick play touchdown. This tied the game up, and caused confusion for Fox Sports play-by-play commentator Tim Brando, who called the number change without providing player information. Tech would go on to lose the game, however Bruffy’s play was one of the more memorable in the disappointing 2016 season.
Bruffy will look to make his mark this year and continue the success that the Texas Tech offense has become known for. His protection of whoever starts at quarterback will be vital as they try to effectively lead the offense.
Will Bruffy make yet another Piesman caliber play this year and contribute to a successful football season? We’ll find out in just 79 days!
