Grades, quotes and thoughts in Texas Tech's overtime win against Kansas.

QUOTES

Hate me for making this the first thing to discuss, but I am genuinely happy for the seniors on this team. If you think that as fans we have been rung through the ringer, then spend the last four years in their shoes. This is their lives we're talking about. Yes, as fans, we can get passionate, but it's their lives and they have had to deal with things on a daily basis. Doege said it best when asked about getting a win:

That was huge. I'm so excited for these seniors because we get to end this home stretch on a win, which is huge for us because we've been through a lot. We've worked really hard, and I'm glad and feel blessed to have the opportunity to play here. I'm glad that we did end up with a victory going out. That is something that we'll remember forever.

Now we get to the big elephant in the room:

Yeah, he was trying to help me get him off. But he's standing out on the field and we're trying to get him off, and the referee's standing there. I just pulled him off and missed his shoulder and grabbed his -- I mean, it wasn't anything to it. It was just one of those deals where I missed his shoulder and ended up grabbing the microphone on his head set and pulled it off.

Thanks to hawkspur, you get two still shots of the incident:

I do not think that head coach Tommy Tuberville slapped the graduate assistant. In the second photo, he's about to grab the microphone, not slap the GA. I do think that it was inappropriate whatever it was and to me, it doesn't matter if it was a slap or it was Tuberville forcefully removing the GA's headset. It was inappropriate. Tuberville's post-game explanation is also inappropriate because I think that Tuberville's actions were intentional. That's me reading a lot into a situation, but the GA turned his back on Tuberville, the GA is responsible for having the right personnel on the field and that didn't happen. Still, no matter the reason, I hope that Tuberville just comes clean and apologizes, says that his actions were inappropriate, and that he's apologized to the GA. It is incredibly difficult going back and having to apologize, but it's the right thing to do.

Even then, I think that whatever AD Kirby Hocutt does, I'm okay with because I trust what he's doing. He's methodical and careful. If he suspends Tuberville, then I'm okay with that. If he doesn't, then I'm okay with that too. I trust Hocutt's process. I tend to think that a lot of people want to see Tuberville punished because they dislike him as a coach and that's not appropriate either. I understand that Tuberville isn't the most popular coach, but more than anything, I trust in Hocutt and I'll feel pretty comfortable with what he does no matter what.

Ummm, QB Seth Doege's numbers were really quite ridiculous. He was 45 of 59 (76%) for 508 yards passing and 4 touchdowns. He averaged 8.0 yards per attempt which is not just dinking and dunking the ball, but actually getting the ball down the field. Doege's lone interception was a result of IR Jakeem Grant giving up on the play, he was about to get leveled by a safety had he continued his route to catch the ball, but the ball was in the window where Grant was supposed to be. Doege did just about everything and despite a strong wind, he found ways to get the ball down the field. He was quick on his feet and I think that this may have been the best game I've ever seen him play

I don't think that the reason the running backs struggled was because of the running backs themselves, they just had zero running room for three quarters and quite frankly, I'm surprised that this team finished with positive yards running the ball. I thought that RB Kenny Williams did a nice job in the 4th quarter and actually had a couple of nice runs. RB Sadale Foster is going to be electric next year with another year under his belt. He couldn't get anything going offensively, but he sure has the potential to make guys miss every time he touches the ball and that is an uncommon trait. I loved that RB Eric Stephens got a rushing touchdown and passing touchdown on senior day. I am happy for him.

His 4th down drop left me scratching my head, but he wouldn't be denied. If he keeps this up, he's going to go pro after this year and we will miss him greatly. I hope he stays another year. WR Darrin Moore was on point and successful this week because he ran excellent routes and he was right where he needed to be on just about every occasion. Again, 10 players, including Doege, caught a pass against Kansas. Doege spread it around as much as humanly possible and I think it served him well.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Let's get to the good, which is that Doege was clean just about all day. The official stats say that Kansas had 2 sacks, but I don't even remember them to be honest, so I don't think they were all that impactful. Now, they couldn't get a man on anyone in the running game and that was just an awful performance for 3/4's of the afternoon. Texas Tech was not facing the '85 Bears defense and Kansas had, prior to this week, given up 211 and 299 yards the past two weeks. As a unit, they had better figure it out. I don't know if this is because we're still in the middle of a philosophy change, from big guys that have some agility to more agile players. OC Neal Brown and OL coach Chris Thomsen need to figure out why there is such a disconnect sometimes. I would mention that Kansas did hold Oklahoma St. to 114 yards rushing so there is some precedent for stopping a good team, but there was something seriously wrong with how the running backs couldn't even get out of the backfield on a handful of plays.

DEFENSIVE LINE

I don't think that the line in itself was the impetus for Kansas breaking off a ton of long plays. For the most part, I thought the defensive line played pretty good. I'll say that DT Kerry Hyder is really tireless and he is your season long MVP. He will not get the credit of Davis or some other guys, but these things start up front and without Hyder sometimes dominating the middle of the field, Texas Tech doesn't have close to the success that they have had this year. For the game, Hyder had 8 tackles and 2.0 TFL, while DE Branden Jackson had 7 tackles. I thought going into this game that DE Dartwan Bush would be exposed for being unable to play the run and he was really good against the run and he finished with 5 tackles and 2.0 TFL while fellow DE Jackson Richards also finished with 5 tackles. I think this team was without DT Dennell Wesley this week, which meant that there was really just a rotation of 2 guys, mainly Hyder and DT Delvon Simmons, with Leon Mackey mixing in a handful of plays.

Sometimes they figure it out, but when they don't figure it out, it's ugly and there are gaping holes that cause problems for the entire defense. The first linebackers to show up on the list at 7th, behind the safeties and defensive line. That's not how this is supposed to work. The linebackers, especially on a day like yesterday, need to be making more than 11 tackles for the entire game. That's right, 11 tackles the entire game (LB Sam Eguavoen 4; Will Smith 4; Blake Dees 2; and Zack Winbush 1). That's the problem with this defense, which is that the linebackers are getting covered up and can't shed a lineman to save their lives. Art Kaufman, by trade, is a linebackers coach, so he must be scratching his head as to what's going on, but I would guess that this unit will be better next year, come hell or high water.

It's really hard to give the secondary a passing grade when Kansas had not thrown a touchdown pass in 3 games and then they did it this week. The passing touchdown wasn't the fault of any player in the secondary, it was Eguavoen for not picking up the running back flaring out of the backfield, but at the end of the day, it will reflect that the pass defense gave up a passing touchdown to one of the worst passing offenses in the NCAA. There was one pass interference call on CB Eugene Neboh that was completely legitimate and another pass play that I recall was there as CB Bruce Jones was covering some guy that looked like a giant in comparison to Jones. For the game, Kansas had 29 passing yards on the day. S Cody Davis and S D.J. Johnson finished the game leading the team in tackles, but when playing a run oriented team, that's an awful indication of how things played out.

COACHING

This doesn't all fall at the head of Tuberville, but for the second straight game, I'm trying to figure out what happened on some level. Honestly, if OC Neal Brown has to run the ball a certain number of times, then I didn't have a problem with 22 rushing attempts out of 82 total plays. That's running the ball only 26.5% of the time, which is something that usually just doesn't happen for this team. For the year, it's around 40% and so I'm honestly glad that there wasn't any mandate to run the at that 40% rate, which would have meant about 10 additional runs. Yes, you can quibble with how those runs occurred or running things out of the wildcat or whatever, but overall, this was an offense that averaged 6.9 yards a play. But the offense struggled in the redzone, and had Kansas been a better team, they would have won that game because the offense couldn't convert. For the day, excluding the overtimes, Texas Tech converted only half of the opportunities in the redzone, which is down from the 70% or so for the year. In fact, for two straight games, UT and KU, Texas Tech has been at 50% or lower, 33% against UT. It's getting the ball in the endzone that's been the problem for this team, not getting the ball down the field. Despite the offensive struggles, the defense is the main culprit here. Kansas had not scored 34 points except for one other time, against South Dakota St. in the first game of the year. The problems for the defense were just gaping. The long plays, were just awful. And yes, we can say it was just one play, but those one plays are haunting this defense, for now two games in a row. Huge plays against UT and now Kansas will perhaps be a depressing sign of things to come. I don't know how Kaufman gets the linebackers to play better, but something had better happen soon.

Some quick thoughts as Texas Tech squeaks out a win against Kansas.

Embarrassing.

It's a win and I almost always celebrate wins because they don't happen often, but it is going to be tough to celebrate this one.

I cringed when Tuberville flipped, what I think was a graduate assistant's hat. I'm sure that this is just football and heat of the moment, but I didn't like it and I'm sure that it was the GA's responsibility to make sure that the players knew what the hell was going on. I still didn't like it.. The defensive effort was really tough to watch. Kansas' highest point total was 31 points against S. Dakota St. until they met this Texas Tech defense. I understand that one score happened in overtime.

I am glad that this team won the game and I am glad that the seniors got to leave with a win.

Seth Doege was fun to watch today. The lone interception seemed like it was a result of IR Jakeem Grant cutting off a route too early.

WR Eric Ward had a terrific game. He dropped a 4th down catch on what would have maybe helped this team score late in the game, but he was pretty good.

I got nothing on the defense here and that's probably too harsh, but maybe I will think of something between now and tomorrow morning..

I'm scared to death of what Oklahoma St. and Baylor will do against this defense that seems like it is falling apart and missing assignments. Two weeks in a row that had a ton of big plays.

Viva The Matadors discusses the game with Rock Chalk Talk.

Thanks to Rock Chalk Talk for taking the time when it's obviously basketball season.

Talk a bit about the Charlie Weis Experience thus far. What's your general take on how he has done so far and as bad as things are right now, do you see the light at the end of the tunnel?

You know generally speaking I think we're seeing improvement and a more competitive product week to week. With Turner Gill things were constantly going from bad to worse, Weis seems to be coaching up players where he can and doing his best to work around some pretty big deficiencies. I think his done a nice job in some areas, but it's a long road. The biggest question will be whether or not he can find the right guy to play quarterback in his system and can we put the weapons around them to be successful. Right now we don't have a legitimate QB option and our best wideout is probably the 5th or 6th wideout on other teams in the league. We just don't have the weapons to threaten. Next year we have Jake Heaps moving in at QB. Early reviews have been very positive, but none of us could have predicted the flop by Dayne Crist so we're being cautious. The biggest plus has definitely been on the defensive side of the ball. It might not always show in the stat column, but as a unit this is a much better group and I attribute that almost 100% to coaching.

James Sims has been spectacular, talk a bit about the style of play and what other offensive skill position type of players should Texas Tech fans know?

Sims is a patient back that has put in the work to take his game to another level. He's deceptively fast, he understands the game and he does it with a high football IQ. He's fun to watch. He reminds me of when I would watch Emmit Smith growing up. I think another thing he brings to the table is passion. He really is the one guy on the team that seems to be going 110% at all times and he's driving any success we have offensively. As a fan with little to get excited about on offense, I really can't say enough good things about Sims as a player.

In reviewing the Kansas defense, it would tough to find a lot of bright spots (I can relate because Texas Tech fans were in this exact position last year). I would say that I really like the hiring of Dave Campo as the defensive coordinator (I live in Dallas and generally follow the Cowboys) as he always seemed like a good teacher and getting lined up is half the battle? What is your general thoughts on Campo and what will it take to be improved next year?

This goes back to my statement above. I think on paper it's hard not to look at this group and think it's more of the same but that honestly couldn't be further from the truth. Campo is getting it done, we just have to give him time to get the horses in place. Our players are in position on a more consistent basis, we're making plays and buckling down in the red zone, and in general you can just tell that the defense believes in the scheme they are being taught. All of that helps a lot.

I think to continue down that path it's all about addressing the glaring holes. We have a solid group of young linebackers but we don't have depth. The defensive tackle spot was addressed some this year but end will be a priority as will the safety spot. Right now I think it's on Campo to say 'here's what I've got, here's what I need' and from there I think he can get this thing moving in a positive direction.

What can we expect from the quarterback position on Saturday?

Not too much to speak of. We're really in a bad spot with our passing game. Our quarterback is young, inexperienced and the playbook is very limited as a result. Throw in the fact that the guys catching the ball aren't all that dynamic and it's a bad situation for Charlie Weis as a coordinator. He's been creative and he hasn't quit trying, but it's definitely smoke and mirrors to keep our offense going at this point.

What's been the game-plan in some of the close losses, particularly to Texas and Oklahoma St. and can we expect to see that again?

Slow down the game, take chances, keep it close and see what happens. The defense is very much a bend but don't break style. The offense is going to try to churn clock and cross their fingers for a score. That doesn't mean we're just going to concede a three and out, Weis will get creative, but even that hasn't always been successful. It's interesting, we're one of the better red zone defenses in the Big 12 and one of the worst red zone offenses in the Big 12. I think that right there is the recipe for a close game for better or worse.

1. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the least concerned and 10 being the most concerned, how concerned are you about how the defense has progressively been worse as the year has progressed?
Notes, thoughts, quotes and links as Texas Tech is set to take on the Kansas Jayhawks.

QUOTABLE | The only place that I could find quotes from from the good radio man, RP.com’s Scott Fitzgerald. Thank you sir.

Not like we liked. We didn't want to come out this way. We wanted to make sure that we were up. As I said, our goal was to come out undefeated this season. That was the most important thing for us, just to make sure we win each game and play each game. We weren't able to do that.
- S D.J. Johnson
On playing five ranked opponents.

If you are down in the dumps think if you were a player. I really do believe that the players are down after losing to Texas. This is not a team that lacks confidence and I do believe that this team believed that they were going to win every game this year. I am almost positive that they have had this game circled for a year and not to win it is disappointing.

It has been mentioned that the post-game presser was unusual in that there weren’t a lot of people there and Tuberville didn’t stay for long. I also understand that neither OC Neal Brown or DC Art Kaufman made an appearance. I really believe that they were pissed. Angry to the point that they didn’t want to try to make this sound okay. There is part of me that wants them to stay accountable, but they’ve been there for every other one. This one meant something and I hope that the team isn’t just down about losing to UT, but genuinely hacked and is going to do something about it the remainder of the season.

FINDING THEIR WAY | I am admittedly in a slump. I think the team is in a slump too, but we all knew that this five game stretch in October and November was going to be brutal. There aren’t a lot of breaks in the Big 12 and this week may not be much of a break, but I don’t think that a lot of teams were playing 5 straight top 25 opponents in consecutive weeks. That’s a tall task. The key is that the coaches have to make sure and pick these guys up. They have to make sure that the players find their way. There is still work left to be done.

THE LIGHT BULB HAS GONE ON | I am so impressed with the work that WR Eric Ward has done. It’s really been a pleasure to watch him play and I’ll be disappointed when he leaves and/or graduates. He has quietly been one of the better receivers in the Big 12 and he’s doing it game after game. He did it last year and preseason folks had Darrin Moore as this team’s best receiver. I don’t know what else Ward can do to impress, but you should enjoy watching Ward while you can because you will miss his tenacious block, his catches where he inexplicably stays in bounds and his overall consistency.

KEY TO SUCCESS | DC Art Kaufman has to figure out what he has. Earlier this week, Tuberville acknowledged that Terrance Bullitt will need offseason surgery to repair his shoulder. Bullitt is playing okay, but he finished with one tackle on Saturday against a UT team that ran a ton. The same thing will happen this week. I appreciate Bullitt’s want-to, but if he can’t play then he can’t play. Get healthy, get better. Figure out how to make that shoulder not be injured and make it happen next year. I’m fine with someone like Micah Awe or Zach Winbush getting the call for an injured Bullitt. The linebackers are going to play as an integral part of this game than maybe any other game because Kansas is just going to line up and try to run right at you. For a bum shoulder, this is not a recipe for success.

WE HAVE QUESTIONS | At this time of the year, I can’t help but think of things for next year and one of my questions is how to get this pass rush going. It’s obviously something that I think the staff is concerned about, otherwise you wouldn’t have two JUCO defensive ends in Terrell Hartsfield and Jerrell Jordan committing to Texas Tech. There is an obvious deficiency in attacking the opposing quarterback. The line is going to remain relatively intact, but there should be reinforcements with Mike Starts, J.J. Loller and Anthony "Mo-Ped" Smith. This year, I don’t think that Kaufman has this option, but I would personally love to see Delvon Simmons and Starts get some snaps at defensive end when this team plays opponents like Texas, Kansas St. and Kansas. Where we know that the defensive end will be asked to take on the tackle and a tight end.

GOOD JOB GOOD EFFORT | RB Kenny Williams is a gifted runner and he’s going to be a staple of this team for two more years and I could not be more happy. That is not proper grammar, but I get a tad bit excited when thinking about what Kenny Williams and the somewhat forgotten DeAndre Washington along with Sadale Foster will be able to do to opposing defenses next year. Remember that Washington was better as a true freshman in comparison to Williams. Granted, Williams has matured significantly, but oh my.

BOOKMARK THIS | I will stop harping on the turnover issue after this week, but the needle really needs to move on the "total gained" column. Yes, the defense has been better, but part of a good defense is having the defense create additional opportunities for the offense. The defense hasn’t created a turnover since TCU.

FLAG THE PLAY | The offensive line was flagged for more than it’s share of penalties last week. I don’t think that this has been something that has been habitually problematic this year, so I wouldn’t expect this to continue. Actually, Texas Tech is averaging 6.4 penalties a game at home and 8.3 on the road, so that is good for this week, but might be something to really pay attention to next week as the Red Raiders travel to Stillwater. Also of note, this team hasn’t had less than 5 penalties since West Virginia.
