With Bowman out for an extended period of time, Coach Wells will go with consistency over flashy at quarterback

A new era of football is beginning, one with less glamour and more running the football.

Get ready Red Raider fans, it’s about to get tough. Unless it’s not. With Quarterback Alan Bowman out for an extended period of time, Head Coach Matt Wells has a choice to make, a choice between glamour and consistency. Unlike his predecessor, I think Wells will go with the right choice in consistency and Jackson Tyner.

If you’ve been living without my Twitter or the Air Raid Podcast (by the way follow both of those), there is currently a power struggle at the backup quarterback position. Both Jett Duffey and Jackson Tyner have seen game action at some point in their careers, both haven’t done very well in extended time leading their teams and either or both will have to shoulder the load of Texas Tech Quarterback.

I think the choice is not obvious but the one that Coach Wells will be forced to make. Jackson Tyner is the man to lead this team and I’ll tell you why. Jett Duffey is obviously the better athlete and can most likely throw the ball farther than Tyner but there’s more to being a running back and chunking the ball inaccurately to play the position of quarterback.

Tyner has better leadership qualities, better accuracy, and fits better in this offense than Jett Duffey. Tyner run a similar offense at Rice compared to Duffey who made 90% of his fame last season on a greatly timed Quarterback Draw. This team is without a leader, and who better than a fifth year senior who needs to increase his reputation to lead this team onto the field in Norman in two weeks.

Yes, I know, Tyner throws interceptions. There’s more to it than that. Duffey likes to make dumb plays down the field or fumbles to ball too much when he runs it. I know what you’re going to say, Jett Duffey would be fun to watch but so would a dumpster with fireworks in it. Let’s hope Coach Wells makes the right choice no matter who it is.

Let me mark this the official start of #TYNERHIVE, a phrase I quite honestly never thought would be thrown around outside of the Air Raid Podcast or my Twitter. This is going to be rough folks, so let’s see how long this lasts.

If only Maverick McIvor were healthy we wouldn’t be in this backup Quarterback mess.
