John Scott III was recruited by a variety of schools for a variety of positions. The major recruiting sites listed him primarily as a tight end, but after taking a redshirt his fresman year and adding weight, we’ll be seeing the Hitchcock, TX, native line up as a defensive end in 2019.
A three-star prospect, Scott had a very interesting array of offers to choose from coming out of high school. FCS and low-major schools like Central Arkansas and Texas State wanted him, but so did Texas Tech and Kansas State. Needless to say, the 6’3 athlete chose the Red Raiders and spent his freshman year on the scout team, preparing to make an impact this season as a redshirt freshman.
He still has quite a bit of ways to go before he climbs the depth chart, but Scott has great defensive instinct, an advanced swim move, and a great work ethic that should earn him a few snaps in garbage time. Hopefully we’ll get to see him get some action in the first game of the season against Montanta State, but for now, the players that will see the field the vast majority of the time at defensive end are Eli Howard, Nelson Mbanasor and Quentin Yontz.
