Texas Tech baseball looks to bounce back against San Diego State

After a rough weekend, this road trip to San Diego might get the Red Raiders back on the right path.

The No. 14 Texas Tech Red Raiders are looking to bounce back after a tough weekend. The team went 0-2 in the Frisco Classic and is looking to regain some confidence this week in San Diego. The 5-4 San Diego State Aztecs will be the next opponent for the Red Raiders. The Aztecs are coming off of two losses as well, one to San Diego University and one to Air Force.

The Aztecs are led at the plate by senior shortstop Angelo Armenta. Armenta is hitting .400 this season at the plate with 5 RBI and 9 walks. He has also hit 4 doubles and bats third in the lineup. The most RBI and lone home run on the season for the club comes from junior outfielder Julian Escobedo. He has batted .290 this season with 10 RBI and 1 home run. He is second on the team with a .436 OBP and bats cleanup behind Armenta. Here’s how the rest of the lineup should look for the Aztecs:

  1. LF Matt Rudick
  2. RF Mike Jarvis
  3. SS Angelo Armenta
  4. CF Julian Escobedo
  5. DH Chad Bible
  6. C Ryan Orr/ Joe Fitzhugh
  7. 1B Brian Leonhardt
  8. 3B Casey Schmitt
  9. 2B Jacob Maekawa

It’s tough for us to determine who will be starting these games for the Aztecs. The past couple of midweek games have been started by younger guys but there has been a different guy starting every week. I can tell you some guys we will most likely see at some point however.

Freshman Aaron Eden has made four appearances and one start this season. He has an ERA of 0.77 and started the last midweek game against UC Irvine. Casey O’Sullivan has also been making relief appearances in these midweek games, he has made four total appearances this season. He has a 2-1 record and has an ERA of 2.84. We might also see senior Justin Goossen-Brown who has a 3.60 ERA and a 1-0 record so far this season.

The Red Raiders should lineup normally in these games with Gabe Holt back in center field. This will be a great road test for some of the younger guys in the lineup and a good way for the young guys on this team to bounce back from a rough weekend.

I expect Mason Montgomery to get the start in tonight’s game after not being able to pitch this weekend due to the cancelled game. As for Tuesday’s starter, I expect Bryce Bonin to get the start. The pitching for the Red Raiders will be key in this series as the pitching last week was very good, the offense needed just a little bit more of a boost.
