Pitcher of the week: Mason Montgomery

A sweep of Kentucky was aided by great pitching

The Red Raiders flexed on the SEC this weekend and reminded everyone why they are a national title contender. The Kentucky Wildcats were a tough team, but the Texas Tech pitching staff handled the Wildcat bats well. After winning the first two contests, Coach Tadlock sent out the freshman from Leander, Texas, Mason Montgomery.

For a freshman, Montgomery handled himself well against stiff competition. He allowed two hits, two ERs, and struck out five in 5.0 innings pitched. The only cause for concern were the two walks and 4 HBPs. In the 2nd inning he loaded the bases without recording an out, but he managed to escape the inning with only two runs allowed. After weathering the early storm Montgomery came back and delivered a strong start to put the Red Raiders in a position to win.

The win earned Montgomery pitcher of the week honors and likely helped Tadlock identify his Sunday starter going forward. Texas Tech looks forward to their next game on Tuesday at 2 PM against New Mexico State!
