It took Tre King 22 hours on the bus to get to Lubbock from his hometown in Kansas, but he certainly made the long road trip count.
A JuCo transfer, King stepped in and made an immediate impact during his first year on campus. He played in all 13 games and started five, becoming the second-leading rusher on the team with 623 yards and five touchdowns.
With the departure of Justin Stockton, King becomes the top returning back from last year, but he won’t have an easy task keeping that job. Da’Leon Ward returns from an academic suspension last year eager to get on the field, and many laud him as the more athletic and talented running back.
Either way, both backs can expect to get a solid number of carries behind a strong offensive line in 2018. We may see Kliff Kingsbury place a heavier emphasis on the running game this year with uncertainty at quarterback and veteran talent in the backfield.
