Tuesday afternoon, Kliff Kingsbury and David Gibbs received some much welcomed depth to the secondary with the addition of former Texas Longhorn John Bonney.
We're excited to have John Bonney join our program!

Transfers within the conference are usually prohibited however Tom Herman decided not to block this move citing, “I just want John to be happy.” With all the bad press surrounding Herman lately, a move like this only helps improve his image.
#TexasTech announces the arrival of John Bonney, a former starting safety at #Texas. Eligible immediately. “I will forever be grateful to the University of Texas for allowing me to earn my degree and compete as a student-athlete,” Bonney said. Good on Texas and Tom Herman.

Intense competition at the safety position was one of the reasons Bonney left Texas, however he may find a similar situation at Texas Tech. With the entire secondary returning from last year and Jah’Shawn Johnson and Vaughntae Dorsey already established as the two primary safeties, Bonney will find himself as one of the many.
I still expect Bonney to get playing time with the Red Raiders though and his veteran experience and knowledge will be very valuable come conference season. With Octavious Morgan suffering a long term leg injury, added depth in the secondary is always beneficial.
