Mike Leach made his return to Lubbock on Monday evening. He was at the local Barnes and Noble to sign copies of his books Swing Your Sword and Geronimo: Leadership Strategies of an American Warrior. Local news stations were quick to report on his return with headlines reading “Mike Leach is Returning to Lubbock”. People were hyped to see him in Raiderland again. Some super fans even waited in line for over six hours hoping for a picture to add to their Instagram account. This got me thinking. How would the Texas Tech faithful react if Kirby Hocutt announced the re-hiring of Mike Leach?
Given the track record between Leach and Texas Tech, and the constant bickering between the two, bringing Mike Leach back to coach the Red Raider’s is not realistic. Hocutt might not be up for it and Leach might not take the job, no matter how much he wants to get paid, but fans love him. Leach spent ten seasons at Texas Tech. In that time, he had ten consecutive winning seasons accumulating a total of 84 wins. He never missed a bowl game during his tenure and had more than 150 NCAA, Big 12 and school records broken as Texas Tech’s head coach. There’s no denying he was exactly the type of coach Texas Tech needed, and his interviews are certainly entertaining. On the other hand, he might still be ranked among the top college football head coaches in the country, but his record does not look as impressive since he took over as the Washington State head coach. Maybe he is just spending too much time writing books and hiring lawyers to fight Texas Tech and not enough time coaching.
