Jah’Shawn Johnson named to Jim Thorpe Award Watchlist

The senior safety will be entering his fourth year starting for the Red Raiders

NCAA Football: Texas Tech at Oklahoma Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Watchlist season continued yesterday when the Jim Thorpe Award Watchlist was released. This award is given to the best defensive back in the country yearly and Texas Tech’s very own Jah’Shawn Johnson is on it.

Johnson has had a very successful career at Texas Tech. He has racked up 264 tackles, 19 pass deflections, 5 interceptions, 6 forced fumbles, and 5 fumble recoveries. He has been one of the mainstays for this defense, and has helped Defensive Coordinator David Gibbs by being one of the best players on his defense while adapting to the new defense Gibbs put in place in 2015.

Johnson is no doubt a great player and one of the best players on this defense. I know all fans of the team are looking forward to Johnson having one last great season in Lubbock. He is a true ballhawk that will be looking for more great plays this season.

What do you think of Johnson’s chances to win the award? Let us know in the comment section below!
