Tech baseball looks to clinch Regional tonight

Although the opponent in tonight’s game has not yet been determined, we can still look at the Red Raider’s side of things.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders baseball team looks to clinch their spot in the Super Regional Round of the NCAA tournament tonight. The opponent so far is undetermined, as the Louisville Cardinals and the Kent State Golden Flashes will hash it out before the winner plays the Red Raiders. Tech will have the upper hand tonight as they have played lights out so far in this tournament and will get the upper hand being the home team. Tech also gets a longer break as whoever the Red Raiders play will have to play two games today.

Instead of focusing on an opponent, I will focus on the Red Raiders and specifically how well they have managed their pitching staff. Today, Davis Martin is most likely going to get the start. He has had his struggles this year but I still believe that he is your second best starter. Martin has been able to consistently give you 5 to 6 innings of good work. After two days of this tournament, coach Tadlock has only used four relief pitchers. That is really impressive, seeing that Tech usually uses three to four relief pitchers a game. This leaves Tech with many good relief pitchers who haven’t pitched this weekend. Behind Martin today will be Jose Quezada, in my opinion the best reliever this year, Caleb Freeman, and hard throwing John McMillon. Whoever Tech plays today should be scared as our two hardest throwing pitchers in Quezada and McMillon haven’t pitched yet.

Tech has also had the best offense in this regional, putting up nine against New Mexico State and ten on Louisville last night. Josh Jung has led the way for the Red Raiders and will most likely lead them again in tonight’s game. Louisville pitched around him most of last night walking him three times. That doesn’t really help if you’re the opponent, however he is followed in the lineup by Tech’s next best hitter in Grant Little, and then the two best power hitters in Zach Rheams and Cameron Warren.

The Red Raiders will need to play well tonight to win this game. I nor anyone else in the fan base wants them to play tomorrow. Whomever they play, I think the Red Raiders can beat. Coach Tadlock has done a very good job of managing his pitchers and this more than anything is the reason I believe they win tonight.
