If you could distract a Big 12 team all night, which team would you choose?

Mondays game between Iran and Portugal was a very important game. They faced each other in their final Group B game with the loser set to exit the World Cup. Some Iranian fans decided to do all they could to help their national team move forward. At least 50 Iran supporters turned up at Portugal’s team hotel in Saransk, Russia, with their Vuvuzelas, horns and a giant drum in an attempt to keep soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates awake the night before the big game. Soon a video of Ronaldo asking fans to keep it down began circulating on social media.

This video got me thinking. Which Big 12 team would you keep awake all night?

The obvious answer would be: those pesky longhorns. To most Lubbock natives and Red Raiders, the Longhorns are public enemy number one. The two have met on the football field a total of 67 times. How many times has Texas Tech won? 17. Texas Tech’s 2015 victory was their first in Austin since 1997. Kliff Kingsbury himself said he had been trying to win in Austin since he was a player. Prior to the 2015 victory, the Red Raiders hadn’t beaten Texas since doing so in Lubbock on November 1, 2008, with a score of 39–33. In baseball and basketball, the Longhorn-Red Raider games are now competitive each year. Both teams made it all the way to Omaha this baseball season. If any team needs some distraction the night before the game, it’s Texas.

The University of Oklahoma Sooners and the Red Raiders have added a little more heat on the football field since Baker Mayfield decided to leave Texas Tech for Oklahoma. When Mayfield first returned to Lubbock with the Sooners in 2014, he was met with boos and tortillas. He was even kicked out of Chimy’s while attempting to have dinner with friends. The angry fans made for a more interesting football game. Though Mayfield has since joined the Browns, the rivalry lives on. Texas Tech has not beat Oklahoma since 2012. Maybe a party right outside Lincoln Riley or Kyler Murray’s hotel room doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.

West Virginia

When Coach Kingsbury made the decision to give up his professional football career it was coach Dana Holgorsen who encouraged him to get into coaching. When Kingsbury was just a broke assistant at the University of Houston, it was coach Holgorsen who offered up his couch. They have both come a long way since those days, but many fans blame this friendship for Kingsbury’s inability to defeat the Mountaineers. Maybe Kingsbury just doesn’t have what it takes to bring his friend down. Maybe he just needs a little help. Maybe the band needs to practice in the Overton parking lot at 2:00 a.m. next time West Virginia is in town.
