The matchup
The Red Raiders stay in Lubbock to host the Texas Longhorns for a three game weekend set. Texas comes to the Hub City 31-17 (12-6) after a 1-2 series loss to West Virginia in Morgantown. Like Tech, The Longhorns have been a tale of two teams, going 23-7 at home, but also 7-10 on the road
The Red Raiders come into the series 34-12 (11-7) after a 1-2 series loss to TCU in Fort Worth. The last time these two rivals met, the Red Raiders pulled off a sweep in Austin for the first time in program history.
Players to watch
Junior INF Kody Clemens leads the Horns with a .333 batting average. In 180 at-bats, he has put up 44 runs on 60 hits with 50 RBIs and 13 Home Runs.
RS Freshman NF Zach Zubia follows with a .304 batting average. In 161 at-bats the Richmond native put up 25 runs on 49 hits. He also has 37 RBIs and nine home runs.
Prediction
No matter the sport, it’s always a show when the Horns come to town and this one looks to be no different. Despite losing to West Virginia, Texas baseball seems to be on the upswing under second year head coach David Pierce. Where Texas is particularly dangerous is it’s offense, which has a great mix of hitters who can get on base as well as put up RBIs. Where Tech has the advantage is in it’s defense which has been playing much more consistently the past few weeks. Like Tech, the Texas has really struggled on the road and I think the home field advantage will really play to Tech’s favor. If the Red Raider offense can put runs on the board like we know they can, then this should be a strong series win for the Red Raiders.
