The matchup
The Red Raiders head south Midland for a midweek battle with the New Mexico State Aggies. This will be the second time these two teams will meet this season after last week’s matchup was postponed. The last time these two teams met was on February 20th in Lubbock. Ryan Shetter threw six shutout innings to lead the Red Raiders to a 12-0 win over the Aggies. Since then the Aggies have gone 14-10 with series wins over Harvard and Maine.
The Red Raiders come into the matchup with a 51-18 all time record against the Aggies. This is the first neutral site matchup of the season for both teams and the fourth time in five years that the two squads will meet in Midland. Texas Tech leads New Mexico State 7-3 in neutral site matchups.
Tech will face an improved New Mexico offense that has bated an average of .328 in 28 games. The Aggies have stuck opposing pitchers with an average ERA of 9.31.
Players to watch
Freshman INF Nick Gonzalez leads the Aggies with a .414 batting average. Gonzalez didn’t play against the Red Raiders last time, but has since recorded 31 hits in 75 at-bats with 16 runs and 14 RBIs
Senior C Mason Fishback leads New Mexico State with 42 hits in 115 at-bats. He went 2-4 last time against the Red Raiders and has recorded 29 runs and 34 RBIs on the season.
The prediction
The Red Raiders have struggled on the road this season, but Tadlock is confident in his pitching staff following a 2-1 series win against West Virginia. New Mexico State has improved on offense since their last meeting with the Red Raiders, but Texas Tech is just on a different level. New Mexico State won’t be shut out again, but it won’t be close either.
10-3 Texas Tech
